Except for two pantropical species (Edwards 1979), the jumping spider most frequently encountered in Florida is Phidippus regius C.L. Koch. This species is aptly named in terms of its size, as it is the largest jumping spider in eastern North America. Naupactus leucoloma Boheman, the whitefringed beetle, was first collected in North America near Svea, Florida in 1936 (Buchanan 1939). This species and two others (N. minor (Buchanan) and N. peregrinus (Buchanan)) comprise the whitefringed beetle complex in North America (Buchanan 1947, Warner 1975). Most homeowners over-water their lawns, which may damage or kill the lawn over time. Excess irrigation is one of the major causes of lawn demise and may include problems such as a shallow root system; increased disease, weed, or insect infestation; reduced drought tolerance; increased thatch and excessive growth; and reduced tolerance to other stresses such as shade and soil problems. Florida is home to 25 species of turtles representing seven families. Turtles (including tortoises and terrapins) can be terrestrial, aquatic, or semi-aquatic. In aquatic food pyramids, some turtles are top carnivores since they feed on other small aquatic animals and rarely become food themselves. Like other reptiles, turtles are poikilothermic (dependent on their surroundings for their body temperature).
