Abstract Previous studies suggested the presence of species complex in the so-called Simulium asakoae Takaoka & Davies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Thailand due to its high morphological variability and genetic divergence. To investigate whether the true S. asakoae is present in Thailand, we performed a detailed morphological identification of S. asakoae and compared its DNA barcodes with the morphospecies S. asakoae from Myanmar and the typical S. asakoae from Malaysia. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the Thai materials analyzed in this study were indeed genetically similar with those from Myanmar and Malaysia, though genetic distances 0–2.27% were observed. We tentatively regard this divergence as intraspecific variation, and the automatic barcode gap discovery analysis further supports them as a single species.

Samastacus spinifrons (Philippi, 1882), is the only South American parastacid that inhabits both rivers and lakes. The literature on this species reports certain morphological differences between representatives of lake and river populations. The aim of this study was to analyse the degree of differentiation of these morphological variations through multivariate analysis, and to explore the possible causes at a genetic level, by undertaking genetic divergence analysis using 18S and 28S ribosomal DNA molecular markers, and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The material analysed was collected from five populations of central-southern Chile, two of which were lake and three were river populations. Our results show that marked morphological differences exist between lake morph and river morph individuals. These differences are related with the size of the rostrum, cephalothorax, chelae of the first pair of pereopods (P1) and phallic papillae. The lake specimens present a larger body size, a longer rostrum and more elongated, less thick P1 chelae and longer phallic papillae. Similarly, their body spinulation is significantly more prominent. Nevertheless, this level of morphological differentiation did not correlate positively with the genetic divergence analysis, since only scarce genetic differentiation was observed between representatives of the lake and river morphs of S. spinifrons. These results suggest that the morphs analysed would emerge as a consequence of the phenotypic plasticity phenomenon. Thus, this morphological variability could be explained by the adaptation of S. spinifrons specimens of a similar genetic constitution, to limnic environments with very different dynamics.

Genetic divergence of Babul (Acacia nilotica) was assessed using Mahalanobis 0 statistics. They were grouped into eight clusters. Maximum genetic distance was recorded between III & VIII ciusters indicating greater distance between two clusters that showed maximum diversity amount the genotype and helps in hybridization programme.

We record two species of amphibians for the first time from Vietnam: Bufo luchunnicus from Lao Cai and Son La provinces and Amolops wenshanensis from Quang Ninh Province. Morphologically, the Vietnamese representatives of B. luchunnicus resemble the type series from China. The specimen of A. wenshanensis from Vietnam slightly differs from the type series from China by having a smaller size (SVL 33.2 mm vs. 35.7 – 39.9 mm in males) and the presence of distinct transverse bands on the dorsal surfaces of limbs. Genetic divergence between the sequence of the Vietnamese specimen and those of A. wenshanensis from China available from GenBank is 1.2 – 1.6% (ND2 gene). In addition, morphological data and natural history notes of aforementioned species are provided from Vietnam.

On the basis of the studied materials from the ultraoligotrophic lake Elgygytgyn (Chukotka), a rare for the flora of Russia diatom species Navicula schmassmannii was recorded. In the studied populations of the species a wide variability of morphological quantitative (valve length and width, the number of stria in 10 μm) and qualitative (the shape of the valve and the central area) features was marked. It made the basis for emending of the species diagnosis.
