The long-term maintenance of stable redox-flow-battery performance requires a strategy to manage dynamic volume imbalances between electrolyte reservoirs. Even with ion-selective membranes as separators, bulk liquid exchange can occur within the reactor because of pressure differences across its positive and negative chambers. Disproportionation chemistries, wherein both electrolyte reservoirs have identical composition in the discharged state, tolerate species crossover reversibly. These make possible the use of low-cost porous separators, but such materials are more hydraulically permeable. Here we propose an approach to mitigate reservoir imbalance, using the nonaqueous vanadium acetylacetonate disproportionation chemistry as a test platform. We demonstrate a benchtop-scale control scheme, which relies on a camera that monitors reservoir volumes linked to a microcontroller that regulates the differential flowrate between flow streams. The balancing apparatus introduces no extra wetted components and enables real-time measurements of intra-cycle imbalance due to electroosmosis. All software and firmware is made available for community use.

Abstract In the current process of producing vermicompost on a large-scale, the main challenge is to keep the worms alive. This is achieved by maintaining temperature and moisture in their living medium. It is a difficult task to maintain these parameters throughout the process. Currently, this is achieved by building infrastructure but this method requires a large initial investment and long-run maintenance. Also, these methods are limited to small-scale production. For large-scale production, a unit is developed which utilises natural airflow with water and automation. The main aim of this unit is to provide favourable conditions to worms in large-scale production with very low investment and minimum maintenance in long term. The key innovation of this research is that the technology used in the unit should be practical and easy to adopt by small farmers. For long-term maintenance of the technology lesser number of parts are used.

Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted tremendous attention in membrane-based separation field as it can filter ions and molecules. Recently, GO-based materials have emerged as excellent modifiers for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application. Its high mechanical and chemical stability, nearly frictionless surface, high flexibility, and low cost make GO-based materials as proper materials for the membranes in VRFB. In VRFB, a membrane acts as the key component to determine the performance. Therefore, employing low vanadium ion permeability with excellent stability membrane in vanadium electrolytes is important to ensure high battery performance. Herein, recent progress of GO-modified membranes for VRFB is briefly reviewed. This review begins with current membranes used for VRFB, followed by the challenges faced by the membranes. In addition, the transport mechanism of vanadium ion and the stability properties of GO-modified membranes are also discussed to enlighten the role of GO in the modified membranes.
