The bearings of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) are critical machine elements, as they determine several important properties such as self-discharge, service life, maintenance intervals and most importantly cost. This paper describes the design of a low-cost, low-loss bearing system for a 5 kWh/100 kW FESS based on analytical, numerical and experimental methods. The special operating conditions of the FESS rotor (e.g., high rotational speeds, high rotor mass, vacuum) do not allow isolated consideration of the bearings alone, but require a systematic approach, taking into account aspects of rotor dynamics, thermal management, bearing loads and lubrication. The proposed design incorporates measures to mitigate both axial and radial bearing loads, by deploying resilient bearing seats and a lifting magnet for rotor weight compensation. As a consequence of minimized external loading, bearing kinematics also need to be considered during the design process. A generally valid, well-structured guideline for the design of such low-loss rolling bearing systems is presented and applied to the 5 kWh/100 kW FESS use case.

This paper presents the energy management and control system design of an integrated flywheel energy storage system (FESS) for residential users. The proposed FESS is able to draw/deliver 8 kWh at 8 kW, and relies on a large-airgap surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine, the inner rotor of which integrates a carbon-fiber flywheel, leading to a compact and efficient FESS. The proposed energy management system is based on four different operating modes, which are defined and can be selected in accordance with FESS speed and/or user’s preference, while FESS control system is devoted to power/current tracking at both machine- and grid-side converters. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions, as well as the overall energy performance of the proposed FESS, are verified by real-time simulations, which regard different operating conditions and/or realistic scenarios.

Abstract Flywheel energy storage system as a new energy source is widely studied. This paper establishes a dynamic model of a single disk looseness and rub-impact coupling hitch flywheel energy storage rotor system firstly. Then dynamic differential equations of the system under the condition of nonlinear oil film force of the sliding bearing are given. Runge–Kutta method is used to solve the simplified dimensionless differential equations. The effect of variable parameters such as disk eccentricity, stator stiffness and bearing support mass on the system are analyzed. With the increase of eccentricity, the range of period-three motion is significantly reduced and the range of chaotic motion begins to appear in the bifurcation diagram. Meanwhile, stiffness of the stator and mass of the bearing support have a significant influence on the flywheel energy storage rotor system.
