The ability to tune the composition of nanostructured thin films is a hot topic for the design of functional coatings with advanced properties for sensing applications. The control of the structure at the nanoscale level enables an improvement of intrinsic properties (optical, chemical or physical) in comparison with the traditional bulk materials. In this sense, among all the known nanofabrication techniques, the layer-by-layer (LbL) nano-assembly method is a flexible, easily-scalable and versatile approach which makes possible precise control of the coating thickness, composition and structure. The development of sensitive nanocoatings has shown an exceptional growth in optical fiber sensing applications due to their self-assembling ability with oppositely charged components in order to obtain a multilayer structure. This nanoassembly technique is a powerful tool for the incorporation of a wide variety of species (polyelectrolytes, metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, hybrid particles, luminescent materials, dyes or biomolecules) in the resultant multilayer structure for the design of high-performance optical fiber sensors. In this work we present a review of applications related to optical fiber sensors based on advanced LbL coatings in two related research areas of great interest for the scientific community, namely chemical sensing (pH, gases and volatile organic compounds detection) as well as biological/biochemical sensing (proteins, immunoglobulins, antibodies or DNA detection).

In the last two decades, a significant number of innovative sensing systems based on optical fiber sensors have been exploited in the engineering community due to their inherent distinctive advantages such as small size, light weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and corrosion, and embedding capability. A lot of optical fiber sensor-based monitoring systems have been developed for continuous measurement and real-time assessment of diversified engineering structures such as bridges, buildings, tunnels, pipelines, wind turbines, railway infrastructure, and geotechnical structures. The purpose of this review article is devoted to presenting a summary of the basic principles of various optical fiber sensors, innovation in sensing and computational methodologies, development of novel optical fiber sensors, and the practical application status of the optical fiber sensing technology in structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure.

The rupture of the shaft lining caused by grouting has seriously undermined the safety in coal mining. Based on BOTDR distributed optical fiber sensing technology, this paper studied the layout method of optical fiber sensors and the anomaly detection method of the deformation and obtained the evolution law of shaft deformation triggered by grouting. The research results showed that the bonding problem of optical fiber sensors in damp environment could be effectively solved, by applying the binder consisting of sodium silicate and cement. Through BOTDR-based deformation detection, the real-time deformation of the shaft lining caused by grouting was immediately spotted. By comparing the respective strain of shaft lining deformation and concrete deformation, the risk range of shaft lining grouting was identified. With the additional strain increment of the shaft lining triggered by each process of grouting, the saturated condition of grouting volume in strata was analyzed, providing an important technical insight into the field construction and the safety of the shaft lining.

Purpose This study aims to optimize the structure of gold-sputtered U-shaped plastic fiber sensors. Design/methodology/approach A group of U-shaped Au-sputtered plastic optical fiber sensing probes with polishing angles of 45°, 90° and 135° is prepared. Findings The experimental results show that the spectral response and sensitivity of the sensor at 45°polishing angle is twice that of the sensor at 90°. Research limitations/implications Due to the limitations of laboratory temperature and equipment, the overall effect has not reached the ideal, but the expected effect has been obvious. Experiments also optimize the sensor. Practical implications Optical fiber sensing has always been an indispensable part of various fields. Social implications Sensor optimization is of great help to the progress of technology and the development of science and technology. Originality/value The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.
