The multi-exposure fusion (MEF) technique provides humans a new opportunity for natural scene representation, and the related quality assessment issues are urgent to be considered for validating the effectiveness of these techniques. In this paper, a curvature and entropy statistics-based blind MEF image quality assessment (CE-BMIQA) method is proposed to perceive the quality degradation objectively. The transformation process from multiple images with different exposure levels to the final MEF image leads to the loss of structure and detail information, so that the related curvature statistics features and entropy statistics features are utilized to portray the above distortion presentation. The former features are extracted from the histogram statistics of surface type map calculated by mean curvature and Gaussian curvature of MEF image. Moreover, contrast energy weighting is attached to consider the contrast variation of the MEF image. The latter features refer to spatial entropy and spectral entropy. All extracted features based on a multi-scale scheme are aggregated by training the quality regression model via random forest. Since the MEF image and its feature representation are spatially symmetric in physics, the final prediction quality is symmetric to and representative of the image distortion. Experimental results on a public MEF image database demonstrate that the proposed CE-BMIQA method achieves more outstanding performance than the state-of-the-art blind image quality assessment ones.

Compared with ordinary single exposure images, multi-exposure fusion (MEF) images are prone to color imbalance, detail information loss and abnormal exposure in the process of combining multiple images with different exposure levels. In this paper, we proposed a human visual perception-based multi-exposure fusion image quality assessment method by considering the related perceptual features (i.e., color, dense scale invariant feature transform (DSIFT) and exposure) to measure the quality degradation accurately, which is closely related to the symmetry principle in human eyes. Firstly, the L1 norm of chrominance components between fused images and the designed pseudo images with the most severe color attenuation is calculated to measure the global color degradation, and the color saturation similarity is added to eliminate the influence of color over-saturation. Secondly, a set of distorted images under different exposure levels with strong edge information of fused image is constructed through the structural transfer, thus DSIFT similarity and DSIFT saturation are computed to measure the local detail loss and enhancement, respectively. Thirdly, Gauss exposure function is used to detect the over-exposure or under-exposure areas, and the above perceptual features are aggregated with random forest to predict the final quality of fused image. Experimental results on a public MEF subjective assessment database show the superiority of the proposed method with the state-of-the-art image quality assessment models.

Image quality assessment has been a very active research area in the field of image processing, and there have been numerous methods proposed. However, most of the existing methods focus on digital images that only or mainly contain pictures or photos taken by digital cameras. Traditional approaches evaluate an input image as a whole and try to estimate a quality score for the image, in order to give viewers an idea of how “good” the image looks. In this paper, we mainly focus on the quality evaluation of contents of symbols like texts, bar-codes, QR-codes, lines, and hand-writings in target images. Estimating a quality score for this kind of information can be based on whether or not it is readable by a human, or recognizable by a decoder. Moreover, we mainly study the viewing quality of the scanned document of a printed image. For this purpose, we propose a novel image quality assessment algorithm that is able to determine the readability of a scanned document or regions in a scanned document. Experimental results on some testing images demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract A new blind image quality assessment method called No-Reference Image Quality Assessment Based on Multi-Order Gradients Statistics is proposed, which is aimed at solving the problem that the existing no-reference image quality assessment methods cannot determine the type of image distortion and that the quality evaluation has poor robustness for different types of distortion. In this article, an 18-dimensional image feature vector is constructed from gradient magnitude features, relative gradient orientation features, and relative gradient magnitude features over two scales and three orders on the basis of the relationship between multi-order gradient statistics and the type and degree of image distortion. The feature matrix and distortion types of known distorted images are used to train an AdaBoost_BP neural network to determine the image distortion type; the feature matrix and subjective scores of known distorted images are used to train an AdaBoost_BP neural network to determine the image distortion degree. A series of comparative experiments were carried out using Laboratory of Image and Video Engineering (LIVE), LIVE Multiply Distorted Image Quality, Tampere Image, and Optics Remote Sensing Image databases. Experimental results show that the proposed method has high distortion type judgment accuracy and that the quality score shows good subjective consistency and robustness for all types of distortion. The performance of the proposed method is not constricted to a particular database, and the proposed method has high operational efficiency.
