Three new species of Lauraceae are described and illustrated and their relationships are discussed. One new species, Beilschmiedia vohemarensis van der Werff, is endemic to Madagascar and differs from the similar B. microphylla (Kosterm.) Kosterm. in its type of pubescence and habitat. Licaria monsalveae van der Werff is restricted to the Choco region of Colombia and differs from the similar L. brasiliensis (Nees) Kosterm. in its tomentulose, not appressed pubescence. Ocotea sacculifera van der Werff is only known from Bolivia and differs from all other species of Ocotea Aubl. in its pouchlike domatia.

The Early Cambrian olenelline trilobites are a diverse clade and have been the subject of several phylogenetic analyses. Here, three new species of Bradyfallotaspis Fritz, 1972 (B. coriae, B. nicolascagei, and B. sekwiensis) and one new species of Nevadia Walcott, 1910 (N. saupeae) are described from the Sekwi Formation of the Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada. In addition, new specimens potentially referable to Nevadia ovalis McMenamin, 1987 were recovered that may expand that species’ geographic range, which was thought to be restricted to Sonora, Mexico. The results of a phylogenetic analysis incorporating several olenelline taxa, including Judomia absita Fritz, 1973 from the Sekwi Formation, are also presented herein. This species has been assigned to various olenelline genera, including Judomia Lermontova, 1951 and Paranevadella Palmer & Repina, 1993. Phylogenetic analysis suggests this species is closely related to Judomia tera Lazarenko, 1960 from Siberia. This phylogenetic relationship provides further support for the hypothesis that a close biogeographic relationship existed between Laurentia and Siberia during the Cambrian.

Taxonomic updates and descriptions of four new species from Yunnan, China are provided: three new species in the genus Pitambara Distant, 1906: P. triremiprocta Wang & Soulier-Perkins, sp. nov., P. impudica Wang & Bourgoin, sp. nov., P. tricorne Wang & Wang, sp. nov., and one new species in the genus Serida Walker, 1857: Serida parenthesisflexuosa Wang & Soulier-Perkins, sp. nov. A new identification key to Pitambara species is provided, as well as to the species of the genus Lacusa Stål, 1862. Lacusa yunnanensis Chou & Huang, 1985 stat. rev. is not considered as a synonym of the species L. fuscofasciata (Stål, 1854) anymore and Lacusa orientalis (Liang, 2000) is transferred to the genus Acothrura Melichar, 1915 as Acothrura orientalis (Liang, 2000) comb. nov.

Twenty-two species of Early Permian colonial rugose corals belonging to 12 genera from 10 locations in the Stikine River area in northwestern British Columbia, Canada, are described. These include three new species ofFomichevella(F. magna, F. southeri, F. bamberi); two species ofHeintzella; five species ofHeritschioides, of which three are new (H. bagleyae, H. garvinae, H. hoganae); two new species ofParaheritschioides(P. jennyi, P. wickenae); one new species questionably assigned toKleopatrina(K.?stikinensis); two new species ofPetalaxis(P. guaspariniae, P. neriae); and two new species ofLytvophyllum(L.?mongeri, L. wersoni). In addition, five new species assigned to five new genera are here namedEastonastraea complexa, Fedorowskiella simplex, Pararachnastraea lewisi, Stikineastraea thomasi, andWilsonastraea rigbyi.These corals occur in rocks forming part of the Stikine terrane, the largest tectonostratigraphic unit in western Canada. This coral fauna shows a very close affinity with that of the Lower Permian McCloud Limestone of the eastern Klamath Mountains of northern California, and there is some similarity to the Coyote Butte fauna of central Oregon. Several species compare most closely with species from Spitsbergen, but there are few similarities with any cratonal North American faunas and none with Tethyan faunas.

Keys and checklists of genera are provided. The type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, China (GUGC).

AbstractAn assemblage of microplankton from the Cornbrash of Yorkshire is described. It consists dominantly of dinoflagellates, including three new species of Gonyaulax and one new species of Pareodinia. A relatively small number of hystrichospheres are present, including new species of Baltisphaeridium, Cymatiosphaera, and Pterospermopsis. The character and significance of the assemblage are discussed.

Two new species of Machilinus Silvestri, 1905 (M. petrophilus Kaplin, sp. nov., M. obscurus Kaplin, sp. nov.) from Ukraine and one new species of Charimachilis Wygodzinsky, 1939 (C. rostoviensis Kaplin sp. nov.) from Southern Russia are described. The new species of Machilinus belong to the subgenus Machilinus s. str. with 1 + 1 eversible vesicles on urocoxites II–VII, and urostyli with apical spines; to the group “rupestris” with 2nd and 3rd articles of male maxillary palpus without ventral spines (M. obscurus sp. nov.), and with spines on these articles (M. petrophilus sp. nov.). Machilinus petrophilus sp. nov. differs from M. rocai Bach, 1975 in the color and ratio of length to width of compound eyes, the presence of numerous short chaetae on the clypeus, the structure of the lateral apophysis on the 2nd article of the male maxillary palpus, and the number of ventral spines on the legs. Machilinus obscurus sp. nov. differs from the other species of the group “rupestris” in the color of compound eyes, the presence of numerous short chaetae on the male frons and clypeus, and in other features. Charimachilis rostoviensis sp. nov. (Machilidae) most closely resembles C. ukrainensis Stach, 1958. Charimachilis rostoviensis sp. nov. differs from C. ukrainensis in the shape of posterior angle of urosternites, and ratios of lengths of urostyli and urocoxites.

While preparing a manual on the marine bivalves of the Panamic Province, we have found three species of the Periplomatidae that lack names. In this paper, we describe two new species from Mexico, Periploma skoglundae and P. hendrickxi, and one new species from El Salvador, P. kaiserae.

Callidiopini species in the collection of Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) were examined. Three new species of the genus Ceresium Newman, 1842, are described, i.e. C. clytinioides sp. nov., C. sugiartoi sp. nov., both from Kalimantan, and C. emarginatum sp. nov. from Papua. One new species of the genus Examnes Pascoe, 1869, from Kalimantan, E. subvermiculatus sp. nov. is described.
