Urgency of the issues concerning studying water quality in mountain-glacial high-mountain regions of the Caucasus where the rivers feeding the Kabardino-Balkar Republic lowland parts originate has been highlighted. The Bezengiysky Canyon river waters have been investigated for Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ag, Ni, Cr, and Cd content. The high-mountain glacial/mountain fed Cherek Bezengiysky River microelements’ concentration values have been compared from the source to the mouth both during winter low-water and glacial flood periods. It has been stated that river water microelements contamination in the high-mountain region is caused by natural geochemical and geo/morphological background and is connected with the microelements washing out mountain rocks. Earlier investigations have shown that the microelements concentration significantly drops in comparison with the upper reach when the river enters the lowlands. It was found that the Cherek Bezengiysky River waters under study in terms of Mn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni, Cu, and Ag content could be classified as clean water excluding Zn which made the water very polluted. Minimal, maximal and average values of the main ion and nitrogen-containing substances concentrations during winter low-water and glacial flood periods have been presented. The value of the conducted investigation is determined by the fact that the Cherek Bezengiysky River inflows to the Terek River and forms the Caspian Sea river basin.

The article is dedicated to the matter of Turkish prisoners on the Nargin Island in the Caspian Sea during the First World War. According to approximate computations, there were about 50-60 thousand people of Turkish captives in Russia. Some of them were sent to Baku because of the close location to the Caucasus Front and from there they were sent to the Nargin Island in the Caspian Sea. As time showed it was not the right choise. The Island had no decent conditions for living and turned the life of prisoners into the hell camp. Hastily built barracks contravene meet elementary standards, were poorly heated and by the end of the war they were not heated at all, water supply was unsatisfactory, sometimes water was not brought to the prisoner's several days. Bread was given in 100 grams per person per day, and then this rate redused by half. Knowing the plight of the prisoners, many citizens of Baku as well as the Baku Muslim Charitable Society and other charitable societies provided moral and material support to prisoners, they often went to the camp, brought food, clothes, medicines Key words: World War I, prisoners of war, Nargin Island, refugees, incarceration conditions, starvation, charity

The inflow of pollutant load from urban areas and the stagnation of water due to sea water intrusion cause the deterioration of river water quality in tidal zone. In order to improve water quality, various measures such as the reduction of pollutant load by sewage systems, discharge control from sewage treatment plants considering river flow, nutrient removal by aquatic plants, and the dredging of bottom sediments have been examined. The choice of these measures depends on the situation of the river environment and finances. In this study, a field survey was carried out in a typical urban river basin, first. Secondly, on the basis of this survey, a mathematical model was formed to simulate flow and water quality. Several purification alternatives designed for the investigated river basin were comparatively evaluated from the viewpoint of the effect of water quality improvement and their cost. Finally, they were prioritized. Through this case study, a planning process of river water quality management was shown.

The article proposed an appropriate organization modeling for Sai Gon river water quality management based on the analysis having scientific and practical basic about aspects have done and aspects limited of LVS management organization (LVS environmental protection Committee) in past time, lesson learnt from effective LVS management performance of countries in the world as well as based on actual study changes in Sai Gon river water quality in many years and practically coordination management and environmental protection river among local area along river basin. The proposed modeling is feasible and practical aim to protect Sai Gon river water source serving for different purposes such as supply water for domestic demand, industry, irrigation, river landscape – tourism, and waterway etc., towards sustainable development of local area along river basin.

The main objective of the present chapter is to analyze the structure and features governing the relations between Iran and Russia in different political, economic, and social spheres in the period from the fall of Isfahan (1722) to the rise of the Qajar dynasty (1796) and to study the reasons for the difference in these relations compared to previous periods and Russia’s actions in Iran’s territory (the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus) with an emphasis on the developments in both countries, the role of ethnic minorities and local khanates, and the effect of regional and international conditions on the relations between the two countries.

The analysis of river pollution and assessment of spatial and temporal variation in hydrochemistry are essential to river water pollution control in the context of rapid economic growth and growing pollution threats in China. In this study, we focused on hydrochemical characteristics of the Luanhe River Basin (China) and evaluation of 12 hydrochemical variables obtained from 32 monitoring stations during 2001–2010. In each study year, the streams were monitored in the three hydrological periods (April, August, and October) to observe differences in the impacts of agricultural activity and rainfall pattern. Multivariate statistical methods were applied to the data set, and the river water hydrochemical characteristics were assessed using the water quality identification index (WQIIM). The results showed that parameters had variable contribution to water quality status in different months except for ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and total nitrogen (TN), which were the most important parameters in contributing to water quality variations for all three periods. Results of WQIIM revealed that 18 sites were classified as 'meeting standard' while the other 14 sites were classified as 'not meeting standard', with most of the seriously polluted sites located in urban area, mainly due to discharge of wastewater from domestic and industrial sources. Sites with low pollution level were located primarily in smaller tributaries, whereas sites of medium and high pollution levels were in the main river channel and the larger tributaries. Our findings provide valuable information and guidance for water pollution control and water resource management in the Luanhe River Basin.

Statistical indicators of many-year observations of the Cherek-Bezengiyskiy River water chemical composition within the boundaries of Kabardin-Balkar State High-mountain Natural Reserve have been presented. The research results can be used for formation of the summarized systematic information needed for development of regional or basin water quality indicators.

The article considers the problems of irrigation water quality in Central Asia through hydroecological monitoring. Practical and scientific recommendations for solving these problems are offered. There are noted the necessity of development of scientific base of researches on all aspects of water quality and protection of water resources; adoption of laws and administrative documents on protection of waters and improvement of their quality; performance of various engineering, technological actions. The hydroecological state of surface waters of large irrigated areas of the Amudarya river basin was studied for regieon: Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, Khorezm and irrigated zones of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. It is noted that the process of salinization of irrigated lands is dangerous for the region. According to the calculations 50...55 million tons of various salts are came to irrigated annually fields. This is the reason for the deterioration of the hydrological state of irrigated agriculture in the region.
