We study in this paper conditions under which nilradicals of totally disconnected locally compact rings are closed. In the paper is given a characterization of locally finite compact rings via identities.

We state and prove a theorem which characterizes piecewise linear homology manifolds of sufficiently large dimension among locally compact finite-dimensional absolute neighbourhood retracts (ANRs). The proof is inspired by Cannon's observation (3) that a piecewise linear homology manifold is a topological manifold away from a locally finite set, and uses Galewski and Stern's work on simplicial triangulations of topological manifolds, the Edwards–Cannon–Quinn characterization of topological manifolds and Siebenmann's work on ends (3, 6, 4, 13, 14, 15, 16). All these tools have suitable relative versions and so the theorem can be extended to the bounded case. However, the most satisfactory extension requires a classification of triangulations of homology manifolds up to concordance. This will be given in a subsequent paper and the bounded case will be postponed to that paper.

Abstract In this paper, we study topological groups having all closed subgroups (totally) minimal and we call such groups c-(totally) minimal. We show that a locally compact c-minimal connected group is compact. Using a well-known theorem of [P. Hall and C. R. Kulatilaka, A property of locally finite groups, J. Lond. Math. Soc. 39 1964, 235–239] and a characterization of a certain class of Lie groups, due to [S. K. Grosser and W. N. Herfort, Abelian subgroups of topological groups, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 283 1984, 1, 211–223], we prove that a c-minimal locally solvable Lie group is compact. It is shown that a topological group G is c-(totally) minimal if and only if G has a compact normal subgroup N such that G / N G/N is c-(totally) minimal. Applying this result, we prove that a locally compact group G is c-totally minimal if and only if its connected component c ⁢ ( G ) c(G) is compact and G / c ⁢ ( G ) G/c(G) is c-totally minimal. Moreover, a c-totally minimal group that is either complete solvable or strongly compactly covered must be compact. Negatively answering [D. Dikranjan and M. Megrelishvili, Minimality conditions in topological groups, Recent Progress in General Topology. III, Atlantis Press, Paris 2014, 229–327, Question 3.10 (b)], we find, in contrast, a totally minimal solvable (even metabelian) Lie group that is not compact.

Scaling and generalized scaling sets determine wavelet sets and hence wavelets. In real case, wavelet sets were proved to be an important tool for the construction of MRA as well as non-MRA wavelets. However, any result related to scaling/generalized scaling sets is not available in case of locally compact abelian groups. This paper gives a characterization of scaling sets and its generalized version along with relevant examples in dual Cantor dyadic group [Formula: see text]. These results can further be generalized to arbitrary locally compact abelian groups.

Let [Formula: see text] be an integral domain with quotient field [Formula: see text]. Call an overring [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] a subring of [Formula: see text] containing [Formula: see text] as a subring. A family [Formula: see text] of overrings of [Formula: see text] is called a defining family of [Formula: see text], if [Formula: see text]. Call an overring [Formula: see text] a sublocalization of [Formula: see text], if [Formula: see text] has a defining family consisting of rings of fractions of [Formula: see text]. Sublocalizations and their intersections exhibit interesting examples of semistar or star operations [D. D. Anderson, Star operations induced by overrings, Comm. Algebra 16 (1988) 2535–2553]. We show as a consequence of our work that domains that are locally finite intersections of Prüfer [Formula: see text]-multiplication (respectively, Mori) sublocalizations turn out to be Prüfer [Formula: see text]-multiplication domains (PvMDs) (respectively, Mori); in particular, for the Mori domain case, we reobtain a special case of Théorème 1 of [J. Querré, Intersections d’anneaux intègers, J. Algebra 43 (1976) 55–60] and Proposition 3.2 of [N. Dessagnes, Intersections d’anneaux de Mori — exemples, Port. Math. 44 (1987) 379–392]. We also show that, more than the finite character of the defining family, it is the finite character of the star operation induced by the defining family that causes the interesting results. As a particular case of this theory, we provide a purely algebraic approach for characterizing P vMDs as a subclass of the class of essential domains (see also Theorem 2.4 of [C. A. Finocchiaro and F. Tartarone, On a topological characterization of Prüfer [Formula: see text]-multiplication domains among essential domains, preprint (2014), arXiv:1410.4037]).

Let $G$ be a topological group, let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ be a continuous endomorphism of $G$ and let $H$ be a closed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$-invariant subgroup of $G$. We study whether the topological entropy is an additive invariant, that is, $$\begin{eqnarray}h_{\text{top}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})=h_{\text{top}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}\restriction _{H})+h_{\text{top}}(\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}}),\end{eqnarray}$$ where $\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}}:G/H\rightarrow G/H$ is the map induced by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$. We concentrate on the case when $G$ is totally disconnected locally compact and $H$ is either compact or normal. Under these hypotheses, we show that the above additivity property holds true whenever $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}H=H$ and $\ker (\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})\leq H$. As an application, we give a dynamical interpretation of the scale $s(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})$ by showing that $\log s(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})$ is the topological entropy of a suitable map induced by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$. Finally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $\log s(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})=h_{\text{top}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})$ to hold.
