Background: One of the effective factors on controlling fire stations' system is situational awareness potentially varying in different scenarios. This study will investigate the relationship between situational awareness, as a set of the cognitive attributes, and ergonomics. It has been proved that situational awareness improves the performance of an organization's staff. Methods: This is semi-experimental research in which 30 firefighters from Isfahan urban fire stations participated. Materials used in this research are brachial pressure, a pulse oximeter (fingertip), and Situation Awareness Assessment Approaches. In each step, five firefighters from one fire station were tested twice. Results: Average score of situational awareness did not change significantly after the fire station alarm compared to before it. After the alarm, physiological variables such as blood pressure and heart rate decreased and increased, respectively. The results showed work experience played a significant role in the score of situational awareness and increase in heartbeat. Conclusion: Given the lack of effect of alarm but the effect of work experience on situational awareness, experienced firefighters’ experiences and training can be used for improving situational awareness in young and inexperienced firefighters.

To locate the fire station under a prescribed period is of strategic significance in the urban fire planning. On the .Net platform, integrate the Genetic Algorithm and Geographic Information System (GIS) via the C# language to resolve the complicated issue of the spatial site selection. The GIS spatial data will be imported to the module first. Then on the basis of both the spatial analysis feature and the network analysis feature of GIS, calculate the individual’s fitness in the process of the genetic evolution. The Conventional coding approach is generally utilized to optimize the small-scale data set. However, to meet the search requirements in the massive spatial data of GIS, the object oriented coding approach is designed in the module. It is indicated that the entire module is able to resolve the site selection issue of the urban fire station properly, which meets the quick response’s requirements.

At present, planning and layout of fire station locations in our nation is mainly based on drawing method and grid method with little consideration of spatial distribution characteristics of fire risk in urban areas. Based on this background, this paper combines fire risk assessment with GIS technology and presents an approach to optimizing layout of urban fire station based on fire risk assessment. According to the result of urban fire risk assessment, the approach sets areas with higher potential fire risk as key points of urban fire safety, makes a gradual optimization of potential fire stations with 2-min respond time from fire station to fire scene and the shortest distance from fire station to various fire scenes as the major limiting factor, and finally determines the spatial layout of fire stations. This paper takes Fuzhou in Fujian Province as the study area and conducts an empirical research.
