Multicultural Education and Technology Integration

The article includes a description of the foundation of multicultural education and a delineation of the concept and its processes. It will also include a depiction of multicultural instructional strategies, and the transformations academic institutions must undergo to adopt the multicultural philosophy. Finally, the article will include a discussion on how technology can be integrated into multicultural education to assist educators.

In this issue, Dr. Monica Brown, a colleague here at the University of Kansas, offers perspectives related to multicultural education and technology. While specific needs exist within multicultural education, readers should see that there are direct correlation between the needs of multicultural education and technology and special education and technology. We would argue that as we strive to address training needs of future as well as current special and general education teachers towards technology, special education and multicultural perspectives should be considered as part of this process and be pertinent to the overall success.

Technology is often touted as the savior of education (Collins & Haverson, 2009). However, is technology the panacea that it is made out to be? This paper is an extended conversation among a group of faculty members at three different universities and their attitudes and beliefs about technology and education. Three professors shared their pro-technology stance and three took a less favorable view. The contents of the conversation were then analyzed by a neutral party to extract the various themes that emerged. What was discovered was that were three major threads to the conversation: technology and educational access, online education, and technology and instructional strategies. While there was little agreement, throughout the evolution of the conversation, both sides began to understand each other a little more.

This chapter reveals the significant and authentic challenges that methods faculty face as they step into a zone of uncertainty when integrating computer technology into lessons, classroom teaching, and student learning. While faculty may perceive that current instructional strategies are successful as measured by classroom scores, a look into the student perceptions of classroom practices, students’ preferences for learning efficiently using technology demonstrates how they are undernourished and dissatisfied with current instructional strategies. The lack of modeling of technology use in higher education is a problem as new teachers leave the academic venue and venture into the classrooms of today. Energetic K-12 students prefer to use familiar technology tools to probe for dynamic knowledge and stimulate personal learning. Pedagogy, at all levels, must “open-up” and encourage students to seek enriched information and answers to questions for which “clarification and improvement” is the best answer. In this chapter, several themes are explored including challenges faced by faculty, significance of non-integrated technology, pathways to implementation, overcoming wait-long-enough attitudes, effective mentoring-coaching models for success, and conditions to begin a successful technology integration process.

To be successful members of a diverse, multicultural society, individuals must possess a fundamental level of knowledge about others and develop strategies to work with other individuals. Multiculturalism and diversity, as content areas in education and training opportunities, are of critical importance in our search for global understanding. The outcome of such content areas is to help learners relate personal belief systems and behaviors to the world and their place in the world. Integrating distance and mobile technologies instructional strategies helps to meet learners where they live, work, and play at times and places of needs. Innovative and, hopefully, motivating instructional strategies that promote engagement and active learning. Instructional strategies that integrate a variety of technologies permit the instructional technologist or educator the capability to craft an environment that is comprised of highly supportive, engaging virtual environments that promote dignity, respect, and understanding. In this chapter, we focus on strategies that can be delivered virtually, through online and mobile environments.

With more people moving abroad for education and work, many countries are becoming multicultural in population. Hence, developing multicultural attitudes is becoming imperative to prevent negative thoughts and feelings toward minorities that may translate into discriminatory behaviors toward them. One way to ensure this is through multicultural education. The aim of multicultural education is to ensure that students from diverse racial, ethnic, and social-class groups will experience educational equality. This qualitative case study analyzes the course design and instructional strategies implemented by a professor in a multicultural education course offered in a U.S. university. We have examined how the professor taught about multicultural education, ensured educational equality in her class, and also successfully produced multicultural attitudes among her students.
