Selection of Transportation Channels in Closed-Loop Supply Chain Using Meta-Heuristic Algorithm

This article presents a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network design problem consisting of both forward and reverse material flows. Here, a four-echelon single-product system is introduced in which multiple transportation channels are considered between the nodes of each echelon. Each design is analyzed for the optimum cost, time and environmental impact which form objective functions. The problem is modeled as a tri-objective mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model. The cost objective aggregates the opening cost (fixed cost) and the variable costs in both forward and reverses material flow. The time objective considers the longest transportation time from plants to customers and reverse. Factors of environmental impact are categorized and weighed using an analytic network process (ANP) which forms the environmental objective function. A genetic algorithm (GA) has been applied as a solution methodology to solve the MILP model. Ultimately, a case problem is also used to illustrate the model developed and concluding remarks are made regarding the results.

In a forward flow, volatility in transportation cost, inventory cost, and forecasting the market’s demand are the most challenging issues for decision makers, while determining the rate of returned products and efficiency in recycling the returned products are crucial parameters to predict in reverse flow. In this thesis, it is aimed to develop and apply mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), scenario-based analysis, and fully fuzzy programming (FFP) methods to maximize the profit for a multi-echelon, multi-components, multi-product, multi-period battery CLSC in Vancouver, Canada. Furthermore, the proposed model is extended to multi-objective to consider the green factors related to plants and battery recovery centers. Fuzzy analytic network process (Fuzzy ANP) is utilized to convert the qualitative factors to the measurable parameters. Then, distance technique and ℇ-constraint method are utilized for solving the multi-objective problem.

PurposeThis paper designs an optimal closed-loop supply chain network with an integrated forward and reverse logistics to examine the possibility of remanufacturing end-of-life (EoL) ships.Design/methodology/approachExplanatory variables are used to estimate the number of EoL ships available in a closed-loop supply chain network. The estimated number of EoL ships is used as an input in the model and then it is solved by a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model of the closed-loop supply chain network to minimise the total logistic costs. A discounted payback period formula is developed to calculate the length of time to recoup an investment based on the investment's discounted cash flows. Existing ship wrecking industry clusters in the Western region of India are used as the case study to apply the proposed model.FindingsThe MILP model has optimised the total logistics costs of the closed-loop supply network and ascertained the optimal number and location of remanufacturing for building EoL ships. The capital and variable costs required for establishing and operating remanufacturing centres are computed. To remanufacture 30 ships a year, the discounted payback period of this project is estimated to be less than two years.Practical implicationsShip manufacturing businesses are yet to re-manufacture EoL ships, given high upfront capital expenditure and operational challenges. This study provides management insights into the costs and benefits of EoL ship remanufacturing; thus, informing the decision-makers to make strategic operational decisions.Originality/valueThe design of an optimal close loop supply chain network coupled with a Bayesian network approach and discounted payback period formula for the collection and remanufacturing of EoL ships provides a new integrated perspective to ship manufacturing.

This paper designs a model of muti-echelon closed-loop supply chain network (CLSC network). CLSC network includes raw material suppliers, manufacturers, distribution centers, collection centers and customer zones. The purpose of this paper is to minimize the overall costs of CLSC network. The overall costs include transportation cost, fixed cost, variable cost, penalty cost. This model is a mixed integer linear programming model. In general, it is very difficult to solve the model. Cplex12.6 is used in order to deal with this model. The results show that this model can be solved by Cplex12.6 well.

In a closed-loop supply chain network, the aim is to ensure a smooth flow of materials and attaining the maximum value from returning and end-of-life goods. This paper presents a single-objective deterministic mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network design problem consisting of plants, collection centers, disposal centers, and customer zones. Our model minimizes the total costs comprising fixed opening cost of plants, collection, disposal centers, and transportation costs of products among the nodes. As supply chain network design problems belong to the class of NP-hard problems, a novel league championship algorithm (LCA) with a modified priority-based encoding is applied to find a near-optimal solution. New operators are defined for the LCA to search the discrete space. Numerical comparison of our proposed encoding with the existing approaches in the literature is indicative of the high quality performance of the proposed encoding.

AbstractDue to the stringent awareness toward the preservation and resuscitation of natural resources and the potential economic benefits, designing sustainable manufacturing enterprises has become a critical issue in recent years. This presents different challenges in coordinating the activities inside the manufacturing systems with the entire closed-loop supply chain. In this paper, a mixed-integer mathematical model for designing a hybrid-manufacturing-remanufacturing system in a closed-loop supply chain is presented. Noteworthy, the operational planning of a cellular hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing system is coordinated with the tactical planning of a closed-loop supply chain. To improve the flexibility and reliability in the cellular hybrid manufacturing-remanufacturing system, alternative process routings and contingency process routings are considered. The mathematical model in this paper, to the best of our knowledge, is the first integrated model in the design of hybrid cellular manufacturing systems which considers main and contingency process routings as well as reliability of the manufacturing system.

By the green point of view, supply chain management (SCM), which contains supplier and location selection, production, distribution, and inventory decisions, is an important subject being examined in recent years by both practitioners and academicians. In this paper, the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network that can be mutually agreed by meeting at the level of common satisfaction of conflicting objectives is designed. We construct a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP) model that allows decision-makers to more effectively manage firms’ closed-loop green supply chain (SC). An ecological perspective is brought by carrying out the recycling, remanufacturing and destruction to SCM in our proposed model. Maximize the rating of the regions in which they are located, minimize total cost and carbon footprint are considered as the objectives of the model. By constructing our model, the focus of customer satisfaction is met, as well as the production, location of facilities and order allocation are decided, and we also carry out the inventory control of warehouses. In our multi-product multi-component multi-time-period model, the solution is obtained with a fuzzy approach by using the min operator of Zimmermann. To illustrate the model, we provide a practical case study, and an optimal result containing a preferable level of satisfaction to the decision-maker is obtained.
