Sensitive data in database should be encrypted to protect it from malicious access. Do this in application is hard and costly. Utilizing the user-defined function technology supported by database management system, data encryption could be done separately and transparently for application. The principle and system architecture of encrypting database content with user-defined function is introduced, and the method handling long object encrypting is discussed specially. Experiments show that the proposed method is easy to implement, effective in system running and application development, and applicable for both new developing and old developed application.

Database is widely used in computer systems currently, and OLE DB is the main method for applications to access database on Microsoft's system. In order to store sensitive data in commercial database management system, application often encrypt the data before keeping it into database. UDF (User Defined Function) is helpful for applications in encrypting procedure, but it can't handle Lob (Long object) data. A secure OLE DB provider for enhancing user authentication and encrypting Lob data in database is proposed. By adding necessary attributes of user authentication and cipher algorithm to encrypt Lob data in OLE DB provider, the security of data stored in database is improved. Experiments show that the proposed OLE DB provider is transparent, efficient, easy to implement and reliable.

Media informasi masa kini sangatlah penting, media informasi dapat menjadi suatu wadah bagi manusia untuk mendapatkan informasi, bertukar pikiran dan bertinteraksi satu sama lainnya. Salah satu media informasi adalah berita, berita merupakan laporan cepat suatu peristiwa atau kejadian yang faktual. PT Televisi Kampus Udinus (TVKU) Semarang merupakan salah satu badan usaha yang bergerak dalam bidang penyiaran dan jasa. PT TVKU dalam melakukan mengelola berita sudah menggunakan alat bantu komputer, yaitu dalam melakukan pengolahan berita, pengolahan jurnalis, pemrosesan berita dan pembuatan laporan yang masih dilakukan dengan cara manual, akan tetapi PT TVKU belum memiliki system pengelolaan berita yang dapat mengintegrasikan setiap proses bisnis yang terjadi. Dari permasalahan tersebut maka perlu terciptanya suatu system informasi yang dapat melakukan pengelolaan berita secara baik, untuk membangun system informasi tersebut menggunakan metode Rapid Application Development (RAD) dengan digabungkan dengan beberapa tools untuk merancang system yaitu dengan menggunakan Unified Modelling Language (UML), untuk bahasa pemrograman menggunakan Hypertext  Preprocessor  (PHP), dan untuk penyimpanan data menggunakan MySQL sebagai Database Management System (DBMS). Hasil penelitian ini adalah terciptanya system informasi pengelolaan berita yang dapat mengintegrasikan data yang diharapkan mampu membantu kinerja dari PT TVKU Semarang dalam mengelola berita.

For commercial database management system is not suitable for storing sensitive data, the data is often encrypted in application before keeping into database. Using UDF (User Defined Function) can simplify the encrypting procedure, but it can't handle Lob (Long object) data. A schema of enhancing user authentication and encrypting Lob data in ODBC (Open Database Connection) driver for database is prosed. By adding necessary attributes of user authentication and cipher algorithm to encrypt Lob data in ODBC driver, the security of data stored in database is improved. Experiments show that the schema is transparent, efficient, easy to implement and reliable.

This study provides a low-cost and high-availability database management system architecture for general Small/Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to backup database data access. To prove that the proposed architecture can support the high availability of the database, and can effectively avoid data loss in memory caused by failovers, this study applies the main test method of powering off the virtual machine and verified three cases on two commonly used databases MySQL and PostgreSQL: Case 1 proves that this study combines the database native disaster recovery mechanism to effectively achieve high availability of the database. Case 2 proves that it effectively controls the WAL (Write Ahead Log) of the PostgreSQL database and Redo log mechanism of the MySQL database, so that data correctness is maintained during failovers. Case 3 proves that it can analyze and control the timing of the database in writing data in the cache memory to the hard disk. This study also designed a failover process to avoid data loss during failovers due to no enough time to write the data in the cache memory back to the hard disk; and finally to realize the high-availability of the database management system architecture in a practical way.   Keywords: Database, DBMS, High Availability, Failover, DRBD
