Edge computing offers the possibility of deploying applications at the edge of the network. To take advantage of available devices’ distributed resources, applications often are structured as microservices, often having stringent requirements of low latency and high availability. However, a decentralized edge system that the application may be intended for is characterized by high volatility, due to devices making up the system being unreliable or leaving the network unexpectedly. This makes application deployment and assurance that it will continue to operate under volatility challenging. We propose an adaptive framework capable of deploying and efficiently maintaining a microservice-based application at runtime, by tackling two intertwined problems: (i) finding a microservice placement across device hosts and (ii) deriving invocation paths that serve it. Our objective is to maintain correct functionality by satisfying given requirements in terms of end-to-end latency and availability, in a volatile edge environment. We evaluate our solution quantitatively by considering performance and failure recovery.

Cloud computing offers clients flexible and cost-effective resources. Nevertheless, past incidents indicate that the cloud may misbehave by exposing or tampering with clients' data. Therefore, it is vital for clients to protect the confidentiality and integrity of their outsourced data. To address these issues, researchers proposed cryptographic protocols called “proof of storage” that let a client efficiently verify the integrity or availability of its data stored in a remote cloud server. However, in these schemes, the client either has to be online to perform the verification itself or has to delegate the verification to a fully trusted auditor. In this chapter, a new scheme is proposed that lets the client distribute its data replicas among multiple cloud servers to achieve high availability without the need for the client to be online for the verification and without a trusted auditor's involvement. The new scheme is mainly based on blockchain smart contracts. It illustrates how a combination of cloud computing and blockchain technology can resolve real-world problems.

This paper presents a concept, developed and tested by the authors, of a virtualisation environment enabling the protection of aggregated data through the use of high availability (HA) of IT systems. The presented solution allows securing the central database system and virtualised server machines by using a scalable environment consisting of physical servers and disk arrays. The authors of this paper focus on ensuring the continuity of system operation and on minimising the risk of failures related to the availability of the operational data analysis system.

Throughout history, epidemics gave humans many challenges, but yet also brought with it many visible and hidden opportunities. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is no except, and in this paper, we foresight the opportunities for a better world that this deadly crisis brings to us. We review different opportunities that this virus and similar recent incidents, like SARS, brought to our life. Then, we pause to visualise through rethinking, redefining and reframing the hidden opportunities inside the (COVID-19) and similar coming problems and challenges. This "think outside of the box" paper create new pathways toward more inspiring economies that would address the key elements we started to miss in our development journey. Integrating future foresight into such problem-solving attempts could create for us more future-informed generations that take participatory actions towards humans’ complex challenges with high availability and preparedness. The paper concludes with a proposed framework to exploit the opportunities of such a complex crisis while mitigating its risks. Further studies are highly recommended if we are to see solutions that could save humanity from the coming crisis.

Compressed air systems are essential components in various industrial and everyday applications. The efficiency of these systems is very important due to their role in the energy consumption of industrial plants. To increase efficiency, a new concept for compressed air compressors based on Industry 4.0 is presented. Due to the aggressive environmental conditions in which the compressed air compressors operate, a new design of a SoC with high availability based on 1oo2 redundancy architecture is developed.

Bats are the second most diverse taxa of mammals in the world, after rodents. Some studies have evaluated if there is a relationship between the environment and the morphology of bats, because environmental conditions can have an important influence on the phenotype of the species. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the relationship between a morphological variable (body mass index - BMI) of populations of the species Artibeus planirostris and the environment, considering the climatic variation in two hydrographic basins of the center of the Brazilian Amazon. The hypothesis is that the BMI responds to the environmental variables of each site. This will be higher during the rainy season and in the high water period, responding to a high availability of resources, according to studies carried out in the same region. 400 bats were captured, of which 180 were males and 220 were females. Although the index seemed to show differences considering the sex of the individuals, both in the Madeiras river basin (ANOVA: gl = 1, F = 6.90, P = .00) and in the Purus river (ANOVA: gl = 1, F = 3.95, P = .01), there was no significant difference between the BMI and the different environments, considering the climate season. It is concluded that, in this study, no evidence was found to support the hypothesis about the influence of the environment on BMI in populations of the bat species Artibeus planirostris in the center of the Brazilian Amazon.
