Conventional practice on managing information in construction has sometimes created a miscommunication and errors among construction players. Therefore, Information Communication Technology (ICT) has introduced Building Information Modeling (BIM) for managing construction projects effectively and efficiently. Different terms on definition of BIM have been used and expanded widely with different perspectives. The aim of this paper is to explore the notion of BIM development from the year of 1975 to 2013. The methodology of this paper is based on literature review on BIM definitions. The findings reveal that there are six perspectives in BIM development which are design, estimation, construction process, building life cycle, performance and technology. From the development of BIM, it can be concluded that BIM is a new methodology that involves the use of technologies in order to improve collaboration and communication of construction players as well as the management of documentation.

The emerging of new Information Communication Technology (ICT) technology namely Building Information Modeling been proven benefits toward construction industry. As a result, the list of BIM software available in the market is keep increasing in recent years. This has led to the selection problem among construction companies. Moreover, the selection BIM software also required high investment in term of software, hard ware and training expenses. These aforementioned issues have increased the complexities of decision process and the need of decision aid in BIM software selection. Thus, this paper has introduced a new approach in MCDMDSS web development by utilization of Web 2.0 application. The rapid development of Information technology has highly benefit to the development of web based DSS. The design and validation architecture of a web base DSS called topsis4BIM for Building Information Modeling (BIM) is presented.

This paper describes the possibilities of using BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology based on object modeling in transport infrastructure projects. The main focus was on investments such as roads and railways. The objectives of implementing this technology were presented and its benefits for participants of the construction process were discussed. The basic principles, norms and documents related to the BIM methodology have been outlined. Then it was described at what stage the introduction of this technology is on the Polish market. Finally, examples of "implementation" projects currently implemented by the main managers of the rail and road network in Poland, ie PKP PLK and GDDKiA, were shown. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to promote the application of building information modeling (BIM) in China’s construction industry, key factors and their relationships are explored. Design/methodology/approach Based on a literature review, 28 factors were extracted and their relationships (239 in total) obtained using the Delphi method. A social network model of the factors was constructed and factors were analyzed using social network analysis (SNA). Findings The top 10 key factors and their relationships were obtained using SNA. Among the top 10 critical factors, six were source factors. They were: training for the application of BIM, guidance from experts, proper management modes, efficient BIM teams, specifications and demonstrations and standards for building information communication. The other four factors included as follows: a willingness to accept BIM, knowledge of its value and benefits, the definition of its benefits and the availability of IT software and hardware. These were mediating factors that could further the influence of the source factors. Originality/value The results provide useful information for public agencies and professionals to understand the immediate and mediating influences of the factors on the application of BIM. Solutions and future efforts for different participants are presented to promote the application of BIM-based on the key factors and their relationships.

With inappropriate design or construction, the functions and service life of buildings begin to decline from the day of official use until they are demolished and resulting in extremely high cumulative cost throughout the building life cycle (BLC). However, the development of building information modeling (BIM) provides a solution for short BLCs and massive cumulative cost caused by errors occurring during the building design and construction phases. BIM is an innovative technique applicable to building design and construction management that has been vigorously developed in the construction industry. The development of BIM technology is now a global trend that can not be ignored, similar to 2D CAD before. BIM can be further developed into several aspects and applied during the construction phase, most important of all, enhance the overall building functionality and save operating cost throughout the BLC.
