To deeply understand the performance of denitrifying phosphorus removal by aerobic granular sludge at low temperature, an aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactor had been operated at 10±1°C. The results showed that the PHAs components synthesized by phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) in granule sludge were affected by different types of carbon source in anaerobic period, and the release and uptake of phosphate were also influenced. It was indicated that the increased ratio of PHV to PHAs led to the increase of the utilization efficiency of nitrate by denitrification PAOs. When initial COD concentration in anaerobic period was lower than 300mg/L, it can effectively keep organic substrates from flowing into the following anoxic period which influenced the efficiency of denitrifying phosphorus removal. Inhibition of nitrite to denitrifying phosphorus removal was decreased due to biology film growth manner of aerobic granular sludge. The inhibitory concentration of nitrite to denitrifying PAOs was 60 mg/L.

An aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactor was carried out at low temperature (101oC) to understand the characteristics of nitrogen removal. The results indicated that nitrification via nitrite could be achieved with an average nitrosation rate of 97.7%. Influent C/N ratio was an important factor influencing the accumulation of nitrite in the effluent. In the experinment, the reactor exhibited a higher removal efficiency for COD with the effluent concentration of COD ranged from 88.2% to 91.8%. In phase I which C/N ratio was 20:1, effluent concentration of ammonium was about 12.9mg/L with the removal efficiency of 77.0%. As the C/N ratio was reduced to 15:1 and 10:1, the effluent concentration of ammonium was around 0.5 mg/L. At the same time, nitrite in the effluent reached up to 21.0 mg/L when the influent COD concentration was induced from 1120mg/L to 560 mg/L with C/N ratio induced from 20:1 to 10:1, however nitrate concentration was remained around 0.4 mg/L throughout the whole experinment.

Biological phosphorus removal was studied in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results showed that nitrite could be used as electron acceptor in denitrifying phosphorus removal. Feed mode of nitrite had significant influence on denitrifying phosphorus removal. Anoxic phosphorus assimilation rate could reach 10.44 mgP/gSS.h and the percentage of anoxic phosphorus assimilation amount was more than 97% with continuous feed mode. Granular sludge with denitrifying phosphorus removal activity was found in the SBR. The effects of different operational conditions, such as COD loading, settling time, HRT etc., on the formation of granules were also studied.
