Mechanical design engineers design products by selecting the best possible materials and geometries that satisfies the specific operational requirements of the design. It involves lot of creativity and aesthetics to make better designs. A gear design makes the designer to compromise many design variables so as to arrive the best performance of a gear set. The best possible way for multi variable, Multiobjective gear design is to try design optimization. For many complex engineering optimization problems multi objective design optimization methods are used to simplify the design problem. In this paper, multiobjective design of helical gear pair transmission with objective functions namely volume of the small and large helical gear and opposite number of overlap ratio is taken into account. The design variables considered are normal module, helix angle, gear width coefficient and teeth number of small helical gear. A recent meta-heuristic algorithm namely parameter adaptive harmony search algorithm is applied to solve this problem using the weighted sum approach. It is evident from the results that the proposed approach is performing better than other algorithms.

The objective of kinematic synthesis is to determine the mechanism dimensions such as link lengths, positions or joint coordinates, in order to approximate its output parameters such as link positions, trajectory points, and displacement angles. Kinematic synthesis is classified into three categories: function generation, path generation, and motion generation. This paper is dedicated only to path generation. As the number of trajectory points increases, analytical methods are limited to obtain precisely mechanism solutions. In that case, numerical methods are more efficient to solve such problems. Our study proposes an improved heuristic algorithm applied to four-bar mechanism path-generation. The objective of this work is to find optimum dimensions of the mechanism and minimize the error between the generated trajectory and the desired one, taking into consideration constraints such as: Grashof condition, transmission angle, and design variables constraints. Finally, our results are compared with those found by other evolutionary algorithms in the literature.

Multi-objective optimization of industrial styrene reactor is done using Harmony Search algorithm. Harmony search algorithm is a recently developed meta-heuristic algorithm which is inspired by musical improvisation process aimed towards obtaining the best harmony. Three objective functions – productivity, selectivity and yield are optimized to get best combination of decision variables for styrene reactor. All possible cases of single and multi-objective optimization have been considered. Pareto optimal sets are obtained as a result of the optimization study. Results reveal that optimized solution using harmony search algorithm gives better operating conditions than industrial practice.
