Mesoporous zirconias were prepared by precipitation method using rosin-based quaternary ammonium salt as a directing agent. The samples were characterized by means of XRD, FT-IR and N2-adsorption and desorption measurements. The phase of precursors was amorphous, and well crystallized tetragonal zirconias were obtained after the calcination at 450 °C. The synthesized mesoporous zirconias possessed high surface areas ranging from 183.56 to 203.87 m2g-1and big pore diameters varying from 6.27 to 7.58 nm. The content of the rosin-based quaternary ammonium salt had significant influence on the textural properties of the mesoporous zirconias. Surface areas, pore volumes and pore diameters of the mesoporous zirconias decreased when increasing the surfactant dosage.

In order to obtain some novel cationic surfactants with high surface activity, n-octadecyldimethylamine and epichlorohydrin were used to synthesize 2-hydroxy-1, 3-dis (chloride octadecyl dimethyl ammonium) propane, which was a kind of gemini quaternary ammonium salt. N-octadecyldimethylamine and epichlorohydrin were used to prepare active epoxy intermediate glycidyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chlorided, and then glycidyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chlorided was reacted with octadecyldimethyl amine hydrochloride to synthesize the gemini cationic surfactant. FTIR and 1H NMR were used to represent structure of the gemini cationic surfactant. The interface characteristics were studied in detail. The critical micellar concentration (CMC) was determined by surface tension test to obtain the values of CMC and surface tension at CMC. The foam ability and foam stability of the gemini cationic surfactant were also discussed through contrast octadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride and cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride.

In order to obtain a water soluble and reactive chitosan derivative, quaternary ammonium salt groups and acrylamidomethyl groups were introduced to chitosan by two steps. The chitosan derivative, reactive quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan, was then applied to Antheraea pernyi (A. pernyi) silk by padding and curing method. FT-IR, XRD and SEM were used to characterize the structure of A. pernyi silk before and after treatment. The peak in FT-IR spectra at 1480 cm-1 and 1650 cm-1 revealed the crosslinking reactions of A. pernyi silk fibroin and reactive quaternized chitosan. The XRD results indicated the crystallinity of the treated silk fiber increase a little in comparison with the untreated ones. SEM images clearly showed the reactive quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan attached on the surface of the treated A. pernyi silk fiber, while the surface of the untreated sample was relatively smooth. The thermal stability of the treated silk fiber was enhanced compared to the untreated one by DSC analysis. It was also found that the antibacterial activity of the treated A. pernyi silk fabric against E. coli was more than 99%.

The paper deals with instability of solutions of quaternary ammonium permanganates, QMnO4 (Q = tetraethyl-, tetra-1-propyl-, tetra-1-butyl-, tetra-1-pentyl-, tetra-1-octyl-, and cetyltrimethylammonium), in dichloromethane and presents the rate constants and activation parameters of the reduction of permanganate. Attention was paid to the properties of colloidal Mn(IV) intermediate. The stability of the solutions depends markedly on the quaternary ammonium salt used.
