Based on digital image correlation method (DICM), this paper promotes a new method for tracking the movements of coarse aggregates of asphalt mixtures. The four-point bending fatigue test is applied as the observed test. The fatigue damage process of AC-16 asphalt mixture is observed by CCD camera. Results show that the new method is able to well reflect the exact displacement of coarse aggregates under different loading repetitions. And the movement trends also reflect the influences of cracks in the specimens. Compared to the original method, the new method provides more detail movement information of different materials (aggregates and asphalt binder). This method helps to the research of asphalt mixtures in meso-scale.

In this contribution a comparison of the results of deformation analysis performed in a classical way using strain gage and modern way, when a non-contact digital image correlation method was used, is described. Both methods were applied simultaneously for the investigation of the aluminum sample with stress concentrators loaded by tension, what prevented the investigation by different conditions. The contribution includes also the comparison of the results obtained using digital image correlation method by different levels of smoothing filters, which the software delivered together with correlation system contents.

Fracture toughnessJCis sensitive to the characteristic of the material itself, as an effective indicator to appreciate the fracture resistance of the asphalt mixtures, is adopted by more and more researchers. The Semi-Circular Bending Test (SCB) can evaluate the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures with different kinds of molding means. But currently, the fracture toughnessJCis measured by multi specimens (at least two), the experimental consumption is high, the single specimen calculation formula didnt appear. Using Digital Image Correlation Method (DICM) can compute theJ-contour integral of a single specimen, compared with the results obtained from multi specimens, the repeatability is better, the accuracy is higher. Test and analytic results show that the DICM provide a new approach to study and investigate the fracture toughnessJC.
