Thermally induced errors can contribute as much as 70% of the final error of the part dimensions produced on machine tools [1-5]. Thermal errors of machine tools can be treated as the superposition of a series of the errors coming from different heat source. 4 key temperature points of a turning lathe were obtained based on the temperature field analysis. A novel thermal error model on the basis of grey system theory was proposed. The basic principle and method of grey system model and its application in thermal error modeling on machine tools had been presented briefly.

In the technology of thermal error compensation in positioning platform with large trip and high precision, selecting the temperature measurement points rationally is particular important for successfully establishing the model of compensation. The method uses simulation to track platform heat distribution and thermal deformation under various thermal conditions. Temperature variables are grouped by different surfaces of the platform. Then a degree of grey incidence from grey system theory is introduced to identify the key temperature measurement points of each surface. Through the experiment data of thermal stress coupling analysis on the platform, the degree of correlation between all temperature measurement points and thermal displacement can be solved. The key temperature measurement points are confirmed by the largest value of the degree of correlation of each surface.

Based on grey system theory correlation analysis methods, to turning center as an example, the study for the thermal error, the detection of the temperature field, thermal point of error detection and real-time compensation technology optimized, key points of temperature on the machine location was carried out. The most key points of temperature sensors are optimized. A thermal error compensation system was set up, and real-time compensation for the processing of authentication. At this stage the results show that the compensation results are obvious.

To improve processing precision of numerical machine tool ,research on analyze the thermal error of spindle, the grey correlation analysis method is used to optimize the thermal key points to build the model of temperature field on the basis of temperature measurement experiment. By optimizing, the number of temperature measuring points from 8 to 3. In this way, the precision of thermal error model and thermal error prediction can be improved.
