A rare case of neonatal extensive small intestinal diverticulosis associated with jejunal atresia

AbstractMesentric fibromatosis is a proliferative fibroblastic neoplasm of the small intestinal mesentery with varied clinical presentation. Giant mesentric fibromatosis is uncommon and its rarity poses a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This paper presents a recurrent aggressive fibromatosis in a 38 year old male patient, who had initially undergone a laparotomy outside for mass abdomen but only pus was evacuated and definitive diagnosis was not made.

ABSTRACT Ascaris lumbricoides is a common intestinal parasite found in humans prevalent in countries with low socioeconomic status. The disease can occur in all age groups but is more common in preschool-aged children. It causes significant medical, surgical, and social complications. Reported complications include small intestinal obstruction, volvulus, and intussusception. Obstruction of the intestinal tract by a mass of A. lumbricoides is one of the serious and lethal complications. We present herein a case of A. lumbricoides infestation in a 7-year-old girl, presenting as acute abdomen. Prompt surgical intervention saved the child. Surgical Option

We encountered a rare case of gastroschisis associated with jejunal atresia and colonic atresia. In our case, the jejunal atresia was not discovered for 27 days after the initial abdominal wall closure. The colonic atresia was not discovered for 48 days after initial repair of the gastroschisis secondary to the rarity of the disorder. Both types of atresia were repaired with primary hand-sewn anastomoses. Other than the prolonged parenteral nutrition and hyperbilirubinemia, our patient did very well throughout his hospital course. Based on our case presentation, small bowel atresia and colonic atresia must be considered in patients who undergo abdominal wall closure for gastroschisis with prolonged symptoms suggestive of bowel obstruction. Our case report also demonstrates primary enteric anastomosis as a safe, well-tolerated surgical option for patients with types of intestinal atresia.

Abstract Introduction Mesenteric fibromatosis-desmoid tumor of mesentery is a rare benign soft tissue tumor of mesentery. On CT, it mimics gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Case Report A 44-year-old female with small intestinal mass, preoperatively diagnosed radiologically and pathologically as GIST. Conclusion Mesenteric fibromatosis is a rare tumor often mistaken for GIST. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry is the key as management of both the tumors differs.

High Index Of Suspicion

This case highlights one of the infrequent complications of a commonly abused substance. A particular high index of suspicion of ischemic bowel is associated with cocaine abuse and should be included in the differential diagnosis of any young adult or middle-aged patient with abdominal pain and/or bloody diarrhea, particularly in the absence of other predisposing factors. To our knowledge, we report a rare case of ischemic small bowel associated with gangrene and pneumatosis intestinalis due to cocaine abuse.
