This paper describes design and operational experience on rotary screw compressors with oil-free compression chambers. Production of this type of compressor began on a large scale in the early 1950s. Experience is therefore based upon more than 15 years' operation, and takes into account several makes of compressor. The main operating and design limitations experienced during that period are summarized, and the paper relates how each item has been studied and the solutions that have been found to improve the design of this type of compressor.
