Wetland incorporated fish-rice farming (FRF) is a possible solution to the problem of high costs of fish feeds in aquaculture in Cameroon. For 12 weeks, at the University of the Buea (UB) the growth of the fish, Clarias gariepinus in concurrent culture with rice (Oryza sativa, L.) in two rice plots (rice plot 1 and rice plot 2stocking sites) in the University of Buea wetland and in two earthen ponds (fish pond 1 and fish pond 2stocking sites) fed compounded diet at 5% body weight was investigated. Physico-chemical water quality parameters of all the fish culture sites were monitored. Mean fish weight gain was significantly higher (P<0.01) in the wetland rice plots (329.21±44.35g) than in the two earthen ponds (30.01±2.84g). Apart from low mean dissolved oxygen values in the rice plot 1 (3.14±1.19 mg/L) and rice plot 2 (2.18±0.23 mg/L), mean values for physico-chemical water quality parameters were within recommended ranges for C. gariepinus growth in all the four culture sites. This FRF experiment proved a better practice in fish growth than the conventional earthen pond culture in Buea, Cameroon. Its adoption by local fish farmers is recommended. Keywords: Wetland integrated fish-rice farming, C gariepinus, earthen pond culture, and fishpond.

The experiment was conducted in two cement made cisterns for a four-week period. Important physico-chemical water quality parameters and harvesting time in periphyton production were studied. During the study period, four groups of phytoplankton and two groups of zooplankton were observed. Among phytoplankton, Chlorophyceae was the most dominant having 62% Chlorella followed by Bacillariophyceae having 15% Navicula and 12% Cyclotella, Cyanophyceae having 5% Oscillatoria and 2% Anabaena and Euglenophyceae having 2% Euglena and 1% Phacus. The grand averages of periphyton mass production were 0.569 (± 0.242) mg DM/cm2 in C-1. There was highly significant (p<0.05) variation (F = 14.692) between C-1 and C-2 in respect of periphyton production. Cistern-1 was identified as more productive due to its favourable water quality parameters, i.e., water temperature of 24.6 to 28.3 ºC, Secchi disc reading of 18 to 33 cm, dissolved oxygen of 4.67 to 9.55 mg/L, pH of 9.12 to 10.18, NO3-N of 3.58 to 10.90 mg/L, NH3-N of 0.26 to 0.40 mg/L, PO4-P of 7.5 to 3.4 mg/L, conductivity 0.412 to 0.719 Ms. Third addition of substrate, that means 18- 19th day was identified as the optimum harvesting time of periphyton production.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v23i1-2.16565Progress. The water samples collected from the selected pond were analyzed at specific time intervals in the month of February, April and June in year 2020. The parameter studied were namely Temperature, pH, DO, TDS, TSS, Alkalinity, Hardness and Chloride. The study showed that the Shatabdi pond is unfit for drinking, bathing or household purposes. The result obtained in the present investigation revealed that the Shatabdi pond is polluted.

The study was made to investigate the potential physico-chemical water quality of Elengena beel. In this study 40 nos water samples were collected from 4 sampling sites (10 from each) of Elengena beel and had been analyzed for some water quality parameters and ranges of results were found as - water temperature, transperancy, depth, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), total solids (TS), total alkalinity (TA), total hardness (TH), chloride (Cl-) and fluoride (F-). silicates (SiO2), free carbondioxide (FCO2), nitrate (NO3-), phosphate (PO43-), colour and odour. Nutrients were determined by following the standard procedures outlined in the American Public Health Association (APHA). The result showed that water temperature, transperancy, depth, pH, DO, BOD, COD, TA, TH, TS, TDS, SiO2 , F-CO2 , Cl- , NO3- , and PO43-were 19.9 ±0.28; 21.5 ± 0.71; 1.0 ± 0.23; 6.8 ± 0.15; 4.1 ± 0.34; 51.8 ± 2.32; 58.61 ± 3.22; 156.2 ± 1.2; 210.5 ± 0.2; 153.8 ±0.90; 170.2 ±0.60; 49.2 ± 0.85; 2.87 ± 0.02; 10.91 ± 1.32; 0.20 ± 0.01 and 0.10 ± 0.1 mg/L respectively. All the measured parameters were within the standard values of WHO. In general the present investigation found that the maximum parameters were not at a level of pollution. In order to stop further deterioration of Elengena beel water quality and to eventually restore the beneficial uses of the beel, management of effluents of Nagaon paper mill in the beel watershed should be given urgent priority.
