Starting from the important question ‘Is it really impossible or dangerous to speak about religion?’ in the first part this article highlights the importance of dialogue in education. It demonstrates how implementation of dialogical education can be beneficial for children and young people who learn to take up and face the challenge posed by multiculturalism and multi-religiosity in our modern societies. In the second part, this article provides a brief discussion of research in educational psychology about religious education and the ‘Philosophy for Children’ method, or ‘community of enquiry’. This specific area of research emphasizes the necessary integration of this method in religious education since it would be beneficial in terms of social cohesion, among other things.

Religious education appears in many different models and varies between educational systems and national contexts. Theoretically, religious education is usually divided into confessional and non-confessional models. However, as several researchers have pointed out, the non-confessional models can be ‘marinated’ in confessional religion. In most national contexts, regardless of the model on which it is based, religious education is intended to serve the promotion of social cohesion by way of promoting knowledge and understanding of the new multi‑religious world. However, in official documents and scholarly literature, there is a taken-for-granted relationship between ‘knowledge of religion’ and such general aims. In the article, critical questions concerning this relationship will be raised.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of madrassa education in building up a religiously cohesive society. The queries and questions which this research study addressed were: To investigate the social cohesion and disparity in the society. What are the key factors, which contribute to social cohesion or lead to social disparity? What is the understanding of madrasa administrators about social cohesion and social disparity? The study was qualitative in nature; an ethnographic case study was conducted to investigate the research problem, in order to investigate the research questions, administrators of all the 5 madrassa boards were interviewed, Semi-structured interview was conducted from the teachers and students of different school of thoughts to find out the different factors affecting social cohesion
