Background and Objective. Drug dependence is one of the serious problems around the world. Saffron is one of those beneficial medicinal plants which is embedded with a similar mechanism to methadone (e.g., inhibition of serotonin reuptake). Thus, it can be helpful in reducing the withdrawal symptoms. The aim of this study was to reduce the daily dose of methadone usage and reduce its side effects using saffron in the form of medicinal supplements.Methodology. This study was categorized as a clinical trial. Accordingly, 44 clients of addiction treatment centers in Sabzevar parish were randomly selected to participate in this study in 2016–2017. While the experimental group was treated with methadone syrup and self-made saffron capsules, the control group received methadone syrup and placebo capsules.Results. The results showed that the use of saffron and methadone alleviated the symptoms of withdrawal syndrome (p<0.001).Conclusion. Having reviewed the research participants, it was indicated that the introduction of saffron alleviated the symptoms of withdrawal syndrome in patients undergoing maintenance treatment for opioid addiction. Thus, it seems rational to make use of saffron in combination with methadone in order to alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal syndrome.

Heroin addiction impairs every aspect of physical and psychological health of the addict, and at the same time, it impairs all forms of social functioning of the addict, as well as of everyone who loves him/her and of society as a whole, so it's necessary to put a lot of effort into treating this disease successfully. Working with heroin addicts shows that the treatment is a long and uncertain process, as the treatment must simultaneously cover three segments: psychological traits of heroin addicts, the degree of social support they have, and their motivation for this treatment. The theoretical goal of this research was to find out whether there is a link between social support and motivation for addiction treatment. The practical goal is to provide the improvement of the motivational aspect of treating heroin addicts, as well as to determine the role of social support in evaluating treatment outcomes. The research was conducted on a sample of 227 heroin addicts under treatment. The perception of social support for heroin addicts is the greatest when it comes to their families. A positive correlation was found between persistence in treatment and perceived social support from family members.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) precursor and metabolite that naturally occurs in the human body. Initially, GHB was used as an anaesthetic agent but was later also found to have anabolic, hypnotic, antidepressant, anxiolytic as well as cholesterol lowering effects. Recently though, research into GHB has been carried out primarily in assessing its effectiveness in treating alcohol and opioid withdrawal syndrome. There are no epidemiological data about GHB consumption in Lithuania, however during last decade there were observed many fatal cases of GHB users due to GHB intoxication or withdrawal abroad. In this article we will present the clinical case and problems which face the patient of 2-year daily GHB consumption. There were observed mild to moderate abstinence state presented with its clinical course and peculiarities. Whereas using GHB is becoming more popular in Lithuania, it is very important to pay attention to this substance and problems related to its usage.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
