Engineering information systems play an important role in the current era of digitization of manufacturing, which is a key component to enable smart manufacturing. Traditionally, these engineering information systems spanned the lifecycle of a product by providing interoperability of software subsystems through a combination of open and proprietary exchange of data. But research and development efforts are underway to replace this paradigm with engineering information services that can be composed dynamically to meet changing needs in the operation of smart manufacturing systems. This paper describes the opportunities and challenges in architecting such engineering information services and composing them to enable smarter manufacturing.

Abstract Product structure management (PSM) is a process that affects many different disciplines in a company. Different disciplines have different demands on the decomposition of the product structure and the functionality of the information systems used. Different disciplines therefore often work in different information systems. If several information systems to some extent contain the same information, it is important that the information is updated in all systems if it is changed. Since PSM is a change intensive activity, it is difficult to perform PSM in an environment consisting of several different information systems. There is a need for strategies for PSM that considers all relevant aspects of an information system, such as the process it supports, the information handled, the information systems used and the organisation. This paper discusses different disciplines requirements on the product structure based on a case study at an automotive manufacturing firm. The paper proposes strategies for PSM that can be used as a guide and for categorisation when analysing the information system before restructuring and/or introduction of new systems.

This paper provides a framework for information systems (IS) design for TQM implementation. The framework consists of three main phases. In the first, TQM implementation tasks are established. These tasks include identifying customer satisfaction variables (CSV), translation of CSV to firm response variables (FRV), benchmarking, and continuous improvement. The second phase includes analyses of communication effectiveness requirements between the organizational entities such as sales/marketing, top management, operations, accounting/finance and also with the customers. In the third phase, appropriate IS component inventories for different communication interfaces are generated. This was accomplished by first mapping the TQM implementation tasks for the communication interfaces. Then appropriate IS/IT solution was recommended for each interface. The final IS design is achieved by integrating IS components at technological, functional, and strategic levels. Finally, a hypothetical example for a large manufacturing firm is provided.
