Big Data Mergers: Bridging the Gap for an Effective Merger Control Framework

The emergence of multi-sided platforms, connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT) has turned us into a valuable information asset, whereby data about our tastes and preferences as a consumer can be ‘commoditised’. Even though ‘data’ is the key to competition, and thereby ensures competitiveness across markets – as diverse from retail to healthcare, from taxi rides to air travel, thanks to the uberisation of the economy – this valuable reservoir of information is controlled by a handful of Information Technology (IT) firms. Remarkably noteworthy is the fact that a significant proportion of the growth of these IT companies is not organic; instead, most of their valuable innovations have been acquired inorganically through acquisitions! Against this dynamic backdrop, this paper addresses the following research questions. First, what are the potential suitable tests for the notification of a transaction, and what factors must be taken into consideration for the selection of a particular test over others? Second, how can competition authorities innovate as regards the ‘theory of harm’? In other words, what should be the design and construct of a theory that can effectively capture the novel concerns in big data mergers? Here, the discussion is not just limited to ‘privacy’ as a dimension of competition, but also other areas of concern – such as non-horizontal effects in big data mergers. Finally, the paper very briefly discusses key factors to be taken into consideration for designing effective remedies.

We are living at a time that allows the generation of mass data in almost any field of science. For instance, in pharmacogenomics, there exist a number of big data repositories, e.g., the Library of Integrated Network-based Cellular Signatures (LINCS) that provide millions of measurements on the genomics level. However, to translate these data into meaningful information, the data need to be analyzable. The first step for such an analysis is the deliberate selection of subsets of raw data for studying dedicated research questions. Unfortunately, this is a non-trivial problem when millions of individual data files are available with an intricate connection structure induced by experimental dependencies. In this paper, we argue for the need to introduce such search capabilities for big genomics data repositories with a specific discussion about LINCS. Specifically, we suggest the introduction of smart interfaces allowing the exploitation of the connections among individual raw data files, giving raise to a network structure, by graph-based searches.

Big data means that the size which is bigger in size, but there are several types, which are not easy to handle, technology is required to handle it. Due to continuous increase in the data in this way, it is important to study and manage these datasets by adjusting the requirements so that the necessary information can be obtained.The aim of this paper is to analyze some of the analytic methods and tools. Which can be applied to large data. In addition, the application of Big Data has been analyzed, using the Decision Maker working on big data and using enlightened information for different applications.

Aim/Purpose: This paper presents a study of Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoP) evaluation methods that aims to identify their current status and impact on knowledge sharing. The purposes of the study are as follows: (i) to identify trends and research gaps in VCoP evaluation methods; and, (ii) to assist researchers to position new research activities in this domain. Background: VCoP have become a popular knowledge sharing mechanism for both individuals and organizations. Their evaluation process is complex; however, it is recognized as an essential means to provide evidences of community effectiveness. Moreover, VCoP have introduced additional features to face to face Communities of Practice (CoP) that need to be taken into account in evaluation processes, such as geographical dispersion. The fact that VCoP rely on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to execute their practices as well as storing artifacts virtually makes more consistent data analysis possible; thus, the evaluation process can apply automatic data gathering and analysis. Methodology: A systematic mapping study, based on five research questions, was carried out in order to analyze existing studies about VCoP evaluation methods and frameworks. The mapping included searching five research databases resulting in the selection of 1,417 papers over which a formal analysis process was applied. This process led to the preliminary selection of 39 primary studies for complete reading. After reading them, we select 28 relevant primary studies from which data was extracted and synthesized to answer the proposed research questions. Contribution: The authors of the primary studies analyzed along this systematic mapping propose a set of methods and strategies for evaluating VCoP, such as frameworks, processes and maturity models. Our main contribution is the identification of some research gaps present in the body of studies, in order to stimulate projects that can improve VCoP evaluation methods and support its important role in social learning. Findings: The systematic mapping led to the conclusion that most of the approaches for VCoP evaluation do not consider the combination of data structured and unstructured metrics. In addition, there is a lack of guidelines to support community operators’ actions based on evaluation metrics.

Despite changing medical paradigm, still a significant proportion of patients with IBD require surgery. The patient's general condition, including nutritional status and the use of immunosuppressive medications is of great importance with regard to surgical complications, as well as the choice of optimal surgical strategy. The indication and the timing of surgery are key factors for the multidisciplinary management of IBD patients. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview on the impact of medical treatment on surgical strategies in IBD.
