English teaching reform is critical for the cultivation of skilled talents and the development of national economy. The paper attempts to analyze the guidance principles of English teaching reform in the higher vocational colleges underlying “the Basic Requirements of English Curriculum Teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges”, promulgated by Ministry of Education of China in 2000. Specifically, the principles should be characterized by modularization, individualization, collaboration, and hypertextualization.

Teaching reform is an important part of addressing teaching standards in China in order to ensure quality in faculty performance and implementation of student outcomes is delivered at the highest degree of excellence in colleges and universities throughout China. This chapter makes a comprehensive investigation in the field of English teaching in 20 colleges and universities in Heilongjiang Province. This chapter will focus on aspects of English teaching reform. The College English Test (CET) is a large-scale standardized test administered nationwide by the National College English Testing Committee on behalf of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in China. The chapter will describe the role CET 4 & 6, faculty, and scientific research played in the analysis of the findings. This chapter discusses progress in the field of teaching English, addresses challenges and makes appropriate recommendations.

Under the background of the continuous improvement of education level, the continuous improvement of education system and the implementation of Ideological and Political Theories teaching in all courses, the related problems of English teaching reform in higher vocational colleges have gradually attracted people’s attention. There is no doubt that the fundamental purpose of education is to promote the all-round development of students, whether “virtue” or “intelligence “, need to carry out education reasonably. The course of ideological and political education is based on the cultivation of morality and the whole course of education, which requires the combination of ideological and political elements and specific subjects, so as to continuously optimize the educational system. The English subject in higher vocational colleges should be integrated with the course politics elements on the basis of giving full play to the original curriculum characteristics, and then better realize the educational goal. Therefore, this paper analyzes the related problems, hoping to be beneficial to reality.

In 2007, the Ministry of Education published the "requirements" for college English teaching, the College English teaching reform has been further popularized, and the requirement of each big university English asked the teachers to improve the level of teaching constantly, so as to cultivate students' comprehensive ability of using English and enhance their abilities of autonomous learning. In order to improve the students' comprehensive cultural literacy and meet the needs of our society and the international exchange, the reform of teaching mode as well as the construction and application of college English teaching can provide us a new teaching mode through network ,which can gradually forme a network of autonomous learning teaching mode.

Teacher professional development is essential to English teaching reform in vocational colleges. Community of practice presents a new way for professional development of ESL teachers in vocational colleges in China. This paper introduces and discusses the process of creating and exploring ESL teacher community of practice in a vocational college. And it points out that teacher community of practice is an effective way to teacher professional development.
