The four sesquiterpenes calameone (1), dehydrocostus lactone (2), aristolone (3), alantolactone (4) and one triterpenoid α-amyrine (5), simple phenolic compounds such as 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, (6), piceol (7), apocynin (8), dihydroconiferyl (9) and coniferyl (10) have been identified by using the proton and carbon NMR spectra which were isolated from a dichloromethane extract of the roots of Aucklandia lappa Decne. Their structures were established by the one‐and two‐dimensional NMR techniques including DEPT, COSY and HMBC spectroscopy. This work examined proton and carbon NMR data of calameone (1) and aristolone (3) for the first time, which had not yet been fully studied in previous literature. Ten steroidal saponins have been isolated form the seeds of Hyoscyamus niger L. for the first time and their structures have been elucidated. Seven saponins belong to spirostane series, two are furostane-type and one is pregnane glycoside. Hyoscyamosides B, C and C2 are new steroidal saponins, which have never been reported before in literature. Complete assignments of the 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts for all these glycosides were achieved by means of one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques, including 1H–1H COSY, HSQC, HMBC and ROESY spectra.

The Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ ions produce zwitterionic type complexes with the ligands (L), 2-(α-hydroxy-benzyl)thiamine=HBT and 2-(α-hydroxy-cyclohexyl-methyl)thiamine = HCMT, of the type MLCl3. The ligands are in the S conformation, the metals are bound to N1, of the pyrimidine moiety of thiamine and the complexes have a trigonally distorted tetrahedral structure, as the crystal structure of the complex Zn(HCMT)Cl3 (orthorombic, a=14.4 b=14.1 c=17.4 β=105.6O V=3392A3 R=13.8%), the one and two dimensional H1 nmr spectra of the Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ complexes and the electronic spectra of the Co2+ and Ni2+ complexes show. A brief review of the previous techniques (structure of the Hg(HBT)Cl3 complex, IR-Raman spectra, C13 nmr in solution and solid state etc) used to characterize these complexes, is also given here and the proper conclusions drawn.

Abstract The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of various alkylsubstituted η3-allyl-η5-cyclopentadienyl-nickel complexes were analysed with the help of two dimensional correlation (1H-1H and 1H-13C) NMR. The use of two dimensional NMR techniques for the routine analysis of complicated NMR spectra is demonstrated.
