This experimental study examines the variation of scour depth with time of Clearwater scour condition around compound circular bridge piers for steady flow conditions. Most of the circular bridge piers are resting on the bigger diameter caissons known as the compound circular bridge piers and are widely used in India for construction of road and railways bridge across the rivers. In past studies, it has been observed that most bridge failure occurs because of scouring due to flowing water around a bridge pier across a river. Most of the past studies were done on the uniform bridge pier and a very few studies have been done so far on scouring around non-uniform bridge piers. Estimation of scour depth is required for the economical and a sound design of bridge pier foundation. In present study, an experimental investigation has been done in a tilting flume for computation of rate of change of depth of scour with time at two different models of compound circular bridge piers by varying the foundation top position with respect to level of bed, i.e., 1. The foundation top at the level of bed, and 2. The foundation top below the level of bed (viz. 10mm, 20mm, 30mm and 40mm) for uniform sediments.

The aim of this experimental study is to examine the effect of inclination of dual bridge piers on scour depth under clear-water conditions for various uniform flow depths. Duration of 4 h was used in the experiments for each run. Scour depths were measured at four different points around the piers. The depths of local scour around inclined piers were found to be substantially smaller than the scour depths around vertical piers. Dimensional and nondimensional curves were developed and presented to show the variation of scour depth with relevant parameters obtained in the dimensional analysis. Results of the study were compared to those obtained from a similar study performed with single inclined piers to see the effect of the second pier on scour depths. Useful equations for the design engineers were developed based on multiple regression analyses, to be used for predicting local scour depths around vertical and (or) inclined piers in uniform and (or) nonuniform sediments. Normalized scour depths measured around the vertical piers in the present study were compared with those computed by an equation suggested by Melville and Sutherland (1988), and also by an equation developed in the present study.

An experimental study of the transport of sediment in a part-full pipe was carried out in a concrete pipe. The experiments were confined to bedload transport. The purpose of this study was to analyze the flow conditions that characterize the stream traction in pipe channels and their relationship to flow resistance and sediment transport rate. Three procedures used in this kind of experimental study were tested and found valid: 1) the vertical velocity distribution near the sediment bed can be described by the velocity-defect law, 2) the side wall elimination procedure can be used to compute the hydraulic radius of the sediment bed, and 3) the critical shear stress of the sediment particles can be obtained by using Shields' diagram. A relationship to estimate bedload transport, based on dimensional analysis, was proposed. This was expressed in terms of both flow and particle parameters as well as geometric factors. Further experimental work is recommended before this relationship can be fully incorporated in a simulation model for the analysis of storm sewers.
