The way iron compounds originate in soil and the means by which they are transferred and deposited are discussed. Natural conditions favouring the production of one or other of the many known iron oxides, and the forms in which they tend to accumulate in temperate and tropical soils, are detailed and interpreted. Some practical aspects are mentioned, including iron chlorosis and the possibility of measuring reduction states in paddy soils.
