S-oxidation of 2-aryl-3-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones with Oxone® was investigated. For all compounds evaluated, selective oxidation to the sulfoxide was realized using 3 equivalents of Oxone® at room temperature. Attempts to selectively prepare the sulfones of ortho-substituted 2-aryl-3-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones at high temperature by increasing the equivalents of Oxone® used were typically unsuccessful. These results contrast significantly with ortho-substituted 2-aryl-3-cyclohexyl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones evaluated previously. The extent of this selectivity was affected by the substituent and its position on the C2 aromatic ring. The ratio of the sulfoxide and sulfone products was quantified by isolating the products by liquid chromatography. Please find the scheme in PDF file.

Benzaldehyde was produced from oxidation of cinnamaldehyde by hydrogen peroxide in propylene glycol in the presence of sodium bicarbonate. Protic solvent demonstrated high selectivity and the yield of benzaldehyde could reach up to 82% in propylene glycol. The effect of solvent on the selectivity was attributed to hydrogen bond interaction between the oxidation intermediate epoxide and the solvent.

AbstractTwo sets of natural Al-substituted goethites from contrasting surface environments (24 tropical and subtropical soils vs. ten lake iron ores from Finland) were characterized by Mössbauer spectra obtained at room temperature and 4.2 K. A negative correlation between Bhf and Al substitution (R2 = 0.751) was found by combining the data of all the samples, which was slightly improved (R2 = 0.779) by taking the mean coherence length perpendicular to 111 (MCL111) into account. The effect of Al on lowering Bhf was, however, stronger for the tropical soil goethites than for those of the lake ores. This is parallelled by a corresponding difference in the unit-cell decrease per unit Al substitution. These differences are believed to result from the crystallization conditions in the two different environments.

An efficient approach for the synthesis of pyrazolopyridines containing the aminochromane motif through a base-catalyzed cyclization reaction is reported. The synthesis was carried out through a three-component reaction of (arylhydrazono)methyl-4H-chromen-4-one, malononitrile, primary amines in the presence of Et3N at room temperature. However, carrying out the reaction under the same conditions without base led to a fused chromanyl-cyanopyridine. High selectivity, high atom economy, and good to high yields in addition to mild reaction conditions are the advantages of this approach.
