Although educators agree that making connections with the real world, as advocated by Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (NCTM 2014), is important, making such connections while addressing important mathematics is elusive. We have found, however, that math content coupled with the instructional strategy of predict, check, explain can bridge such real-world contexts. In so doing, this procedure supports the research-informed teaching practices of using evidence of student thinking and aiding meaningful mathematical discussion.

PhET interactive simulations (or sims), developed by the PhET Project at the University of Colorado Boulder (http://phet.colorado.edu), are freely available virtual tools that promote play and exploration in mathematics and science topics for K-16 students.

Students find linguistics at times abstract and intimidating and they have a hard time understanding how they can apply what they learn in our classes to the real world and how to relate their cultural/community experiences to it. As a consequence, we inadvertently restrict the pool of linguistic students. Inspired bywork done by Hudley et al. (2017), Trester (2017), Chávez & Longerbeam (2016), and by my personal experiences, I created a series of activities for my introduction to linguistics and syntax courses to respond to this problem. I offer some suggestions on how to make our linguistics courses more practical and relatable to our students, in particular first-generation students. The long-term goal is to organically engage and retain a diverse pool of students, thus enriching our field with their perspectives. We can achieve this goal by balancing teaching practices across cultural frameworks.

Problem-solving digital games that make sense of mathematics do not happen by accident but by careful design. This chapter looks at a popular design framework, Game Network Analysis (GaNA), and examines how teachers can use it to turn popular digital games into strong mathematical experiences grounded in effective teaching practices that use play, purposeful explorations, and focused dialogue to make mathematical concepts more meaningful. The chapter involves a careful study of the GaNA framework in comparison with the eight Mathematics Teaching Practices of Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All. The findings encourage further analysis of the GaNA framework in terms of specific academic areas. Explicit clarification is needed to use the framework to effectively move mathematics education toward its future potential.
