Washington State University was the first library system of its 39-member consortium to migrate to Primo New User Interface. Following this migration, we conducted a usability study in July 2017 to better understand how our users fared when the new user interface deviated significantly from the classic interface. From this study, we learned that users had little difficulty using basic and advanced search, signing into and out of primo, and navigating their account. In other areas, where the difference between the two interfaces was more pronounced, study participants experienced more difficulty. Finally, we present customizations implemented at Washington State University to the design of the interface to help alleviate the observed issues.

Usability Tests

Usability testing is a technique for identifying difficulty that individuals may have using a product. Usability tests of the Washington State University (WSU) Libraries’ online public access catalog (OPAC), Article Indexes, Full Text, More, and Other Library Catalogs sections revealed problem areas. A task force used test findings to recommend solutions that led to the participation of the working group involved in designing search screens, the libraries’ User Education Department, and Innovative Interfaces Inc., the OPAC vendor. Solutions are currently being implemented.

FRANK H. DOUGLASS, M.D., of Seattle, Washington, thirty-fourth President of the American Academy of Pediatrics (1963-64) and the immediate past President, died unexpectedly in Seattle on the morning of January 22, 1965, at the age of sixty-five years. Born in Sedro Woolley, a small community about 65 miles north of Seattle, a son of a pharmacist and one of a family of ten children, Dr. Douglass graduated in Pharmacy from Washington State University in 1919.
