Success in seeking federal employment is as demanding and time-consuming, albeit not as intellectually challenging, as ethnographic fieldwork. The time duration from start to finish, anywhere from six to twelve months on the average, is similar. The process can take considerably longer when security clearances are required before one comes "on board," as is usually the case for overseas assignments. Background research is as essential for the job search as for the dissertation.
