Traditional Chinese medicine has become increasingly popular in Europe and North America.There is evidence that quality control in terms of species authentication is sometimes inappropriate. Repeated incidents of adulterations and wrong identification, some even with serious consequences have occurred recently. The necessity of a quality control for TCM drugs to avoid these incidents is given since many years. DNA barcoding was used in this study to authenticate drugs which are often used in Chinese herbal medicine. 37 plants from 28 families were identified using nucleotide sequences of the rbcL gene. Only one adulteration could be detected. Both the advantages and limitations of rbcL as a marker gene for identification were analysed and discussed. We could show that DNA barcoding is a valid and fast method to identify medicinal herbs, showing some advantages over chemical profiling because of its universal application even for unknown plant species.

Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) is one of the simplest traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoctions, first described in China in 1247 AD. DBT is composed of 2 herbs, Astragali Radix (AR) and Angelica Sinensis Radix (ASR), boiled together in a 5 : 1 ratio. Clinically, DBT is prescribed to women as a remedy for menopausal symptoms. Here,H-NMR metabolic profiling was conducted for DBT and the water extracts of AR or ASR, to evaluate the potential of this chemical profiling method for quality control of the herbal decoction. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that DBT could be readily distinguished from the water extracts of its constituent herbs by the metabolic profiles. More interestingly, the metabolic profile of DBT was not a simple sum of that of AR and ASR. Asparagine was found at significantly higher concentration in DBT than that in either AR or ASR extract, contributing mainly to the discrimination of DBT sample. In addition, we employed the same method to profile a commercial DBT powder, verifying its authenticity as compared to our prepared DBT. This study is the first to employH-NMR metabolic profiling for the quality control of traditional Chinese medicine decoctions.

Objective.To realize the current situation and problems of complex interventions’ clinical trials.Methods.Searching at Chinese Journal Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine from 2007 to 2012 by hand, we identified complex interventions’ articles, and then we used the proposed criteria of complex interventions and CONSORT FOR TCM to evaluate.Results.All data is presented as counts with percentages and details in tables.Conclusion.Our evaluation presented that complex interventions have many defects: the selection of the intervention’s components lacks rationale, complex interventions were short of fundamental researches, components’ interactions were ambiguous, and the advantages of complex interventions were not mentioned. Furthermore, explanation of sample size, blind, quality control, ethical approval, and inform consent were neglected in different degrees.
