“Land and freshwater molluscs of Gran Canaria (Spain)” is an occurrence dataset containing 389 observations of 59 different taxa of land and freshwater molluscs encountered on Gran Canaria, an island central in the Canarian archipelago (Spain). Of these 59 different (sub)species, 27 are with certainty currently endemic to the island of Gran Canaria. Various sites were inspected in a period between 1988 and 2020. The dataset is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each observation a stable occurrence ID, scientific name, date, and location of the observation, as well as information on life stage and organism quantity. It also contains supplementary remarks on the determination and the observation itself and links to associated media. We have released this dataset to the public domain under a CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication. The aim is to contribute to the knowledge on the ecology and distribution of these species on the island, such that it may aid conservation and research of these organisms in the future. Recent fieldwork by the author in Tenerife, mostly between 2014 and 2019, yielded new records of alien vascular plants. Fifteen taxa (Acacia decurrens, A. mearnsii, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Ensete ventricosum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis subsp. arida, E. cladocalyx, Euryops chrysanthemoides, Ficus elastica, Lippia alba, Pavonia sepioides, Pittosporum tobira, Populus × canadensis, Pyrostegia venusta, Ruellia dipteracanthus and Wigandia kunthii) are reported for the first time from the Canary Islands. All were initially introduced on purpose, mostly as ornamentals, and recently started to escape from cultivation. Most of them are ephemerals or only locally established, but nearly all have the potential to naturalise in the future. Thirteen additional species are reported for the first time from Tenerife: Atriplex nummularia, Bellis perennis, Chenopodium probstii, Coccoloba uvifera, Commelina benghalensis, Cuphea hyssopifolia, Eragrostis virescens, Lemna minuta, Malvastrum corchorifolium, Plerandra elegantissima, Psidium guajava, Thunbergia alata and Urochloa subquadripara. Finally, some miscellaneous notes are provided on the presence of Balanites aegyptiaca, Callistemon viminalis, Grevillea robusta and Passiflora caerulea in Tenerife.

Abstract Recent fieldwork in Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), mostly between 2012 and 2016, yielded new chorological data for several non-native vascular plant species. The following are considered naturalized and/or potentially invasive: Callistemon viminalis, Casuarina glauca, Chloris barbata, Cyperus difformis, Eucalyptus gomphocephala, E. sideroxylon, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Rumex palustris, Senna × artemisioides (s.l.) and S. × floribunda and are reported for the first time from the Canary Islands. Other first records include: Cascabela thevetia (Tenerife), Cyclospermum leptophyllum (Gran Canaria), Digitaria radicosa (Gran Canaria, Tenerife), Dysphania anthelmintica (Tenerife), Erythrostemon gilliesii (Tenerife), Heliotropium supinum (Tenerife), Limoniastrum monopetalum (Tenerife), Nerium oleander (Tenerife), Pascalia glauca (Tenerife), Phytolacca americana (Tenerife), Podranea ricasoliana (Gran Canaria), Psidium guajava (Gran Canaria), Rumex cristatus (Tenerife), Schinus terebinthifolia (Tenerife), Solandra maxima (Tenerife), Tipuana tipu (Tenerife) and Youngia japonica (Gran Canaria). More than 20 additional taxa also represent chorological novelties but are considered ephemerals. Finally, miscellaneous notes are added for Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia, Eclipta prostrata, Pluchea carolinensis, Prosopis juliflora and Sida rhombifolia from Gran Canaria.

The study of the militias in the Canary archipelago has been a recurring theme in insular historiography, addressed by different authors in breadth and depth, covering not only their organization but also the strategy and weapons used in moments of danger. However, the presence of the presidios in the Canary Islands has had fewer options, as they are professional troops, passing through and reinforcement, that operate on the islands at specific times. The objective, therefore, that we pursue in this study is. in the development of Gran Canaria defense, to oppose the two types of forces that operated in its territory and their characteristics and consequences.
