Abstract. Long-term hazard assessment, one of the bastions of risk-mitigation programs, is required for land-use planning and for developing emergency plans. To ensure quality and representative results, long-term volcanic hazard assessment requires several sequential steps to be completed, which include the compilation of geological and volcanological information, the characterisation of past eruptions, spatial and temporal probabilistic studies, and the simulation of different eruptive scenarios. Despite being a densely populated active volcanic region that receives millions of visitors per year, no systematic hazard assessment has ever been conducted on the Canary Islands. In this paper we focus our attention on El Hierro, the youngest of the Canary Islands and the most recently affected by an eruption. We analyse the past eruptive activity to determine the spatial and temporal probability, and likely style of a future eruption on the island, i.e. the where, when and how. By studying the past eruptive behaviour of the island and assuming that future eruptive patterns will be similar, we aim to identify the most likely volcanic scenarios and corresponding hazards, which include lava flows, pyroclastic fallout and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs). Finally, we estimate their probability of occurrence. The end result, through the combination of the most probable scenarios (lava flows, pyroclastic density currents and ashfall), is the first qualitative integrated volcanic hazard map of the island.

Abstract Recent fieldwork in Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), mostly between 2012 and 2016, yielded new chorological data for several non-native vascular plant species. The following are considered naturalized and/or potentially invasive: Callistemon viminalis, Casuarina glauca, Chloris barbata, Cyperus difformis, Eucalyptus gomphocephala, E. sideroxylon, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Rumex palustris, Senna × artemisioides (s.l.) and S. × floribunda and are reported for the first time from the Canary Islands. Other first records include: Cascabela thevetia (Tenerife), Cyclospermum leptophyllum (Gran Canaria), Digitaria radicosa (Gran Canaria, Tenerife), Dysphania anthelmintica (Tenerife), Erythrostemon gilliesii (Tenerife), Heliotropium supinum (Tenerife), Limoniastrum monopetalum (Tenerife), Nerium oleander (Tenerife), Pascalia glauca (Tenerife), Phytolacca americana (Tenerife), Podranea ricasoliana (Gran Canaria), Psidium guajava (Gran Canaria), Rumex cristatus (Tenerife), Schinus terebinthifolia (Tenerife), Solandra maxima (Tenerife), Tipuana tipu (Tenerife) and Youngia japonica (Gran Canaria). More than 20 additional taxa also represent chorological novelties but are considered ephemerals. Finally, miscellaneous notes are added for Diplachne fusca subsp. uninervia, Eclipta prostrata, Pluchea carolinensis, Prosopis juliflora and Sida rhombifolia from Gran Canaria.

Vegetation research on the lava flows of the historic volcanic eruption of 1705 in Arafo, Tenerife, Canary Islands, is presented. The study area located in the 830000-year-old valley of Güímar was created after a massive landslide 47 km3 in volume. The research is divided into three parts, which cover an altitudinal range from around 35 to 1583 m a.s.l. from the Lower-semiarid Inframediterranean up to the Lower-dry lower-Mesomediterranean bioclimatic belts. First, a phytosociological study of the vegetation present in the area was made and concluded that richness in pioneer communities form a vegetation complex with a high degree of endemicity. Two new associations and four pioneer communities are proposed. Especially notable are the communities of Stereocauletum vesuviani and the pioneer communities of Pinus canariensis. The second part of the research was a field sampling study of 450 individuals of Pinus canariensis, which were measured at different altitudes to obtain data about the colonization dynamics of this species on this 300 years old substrate. We found that stem diameter seems to be a good indicator for healthy tree development at a range between 700 to 1300 m asl, which corresponds to the pine forest as potential vegetation and that many individuals show signs of nutrient deficiency. The third part consists of the publication of two new populations of the Canarian endemism Himantoglossum metlesicsianum, a highly endangered orchid. The monitoring of these two populations has recently begun, and further research will be conducted on all three aspects of this publication, which will be presented and expanded upon in the future.

The study of the militias in the Canary archipelago has been a recurring theme in insular historiography, addressed by different authors in breadth and depth, covering not only their organization but also the strategy and weapons used in moments of danger. However, the presence of the presidios in the Canary Islands has had fewer options, as they are professional troops, passing through and reinforcement, that operate on the islands at specific times. The objective, therefore, that we pursue in this study is. in the development of Gran Canaria defense, to oppose the two types of forces that operated in its territory and their characteristics and consequences.
