We describe the cohomology ring of a monomial algebra in the language of dimension tree or minimal resolution graph and in this context we study the finite generation of the cohomology rings of the extension algebras, showing among others that the cohomology ring [Formula: see text] is finitely generated [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text] is, where [Formula: see text] is the dual extension of a monomial algebra [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is the opposite algebra of [Formula: see text].

AbstractExtending (Smirnov and Vishik, Subtle Characteristic Classes, arXiv:1401.6661), we obtain a complete description of the motivic cohomology with $${{\,\mathrm{\mathbb {Z}}\,}}/2$$ Z / 2 -coefficients of the Nisnevich classifying space of the spin group $$Spin_n$$ S p i n n associated to the standard split quadratic form. This provides us with very simple relations among subtle Stiefel–Whitney classes in the motivic cohomology of Čech simplicial schemes associated to quadratic forms from $$I^3$$ I 3 , which are closely related to $$Spin_n$$ S p i n n -torsors over the point. These relations come from the action of the motivic Steenrod algebra on the second subtle Stiefel–Whitney class. Moreover, exploiting the relation between $$Spin_7$$ S p i n 7 and $$G_2$$ G 2 , we describe completely the motivic cohomology ring of the Nisnevich classifying space of $$G_2$$ G 2 . The result in topology was obtained by Quillen (Math Ann 194:197–212, 1971).

Abstract We show that compact Kähler manifolds have the rational cohomology ring of complex projective space provided a weighted sum of the lowest three eigenvalues of the Kähler curvature operator is positive. This follows from a more general vanishing and estimation theorem for the individual Hodge numbers. We also prove an analogue of Tachibana’s theorem for Kähler manifolds.

In our previous paper we suggested a conjecture relating the structure of the small quantum cohomology ring of a smooth Fano variety of Picard number 1 to the structure of its derived category of coherent sheaves. Here we generalize this conjecture, make it more precise, and support it by the examples of (co)adjoint homogeneous varieties of simple algebraic groups of Dynkin types $\mathrm {A}_n$ and $\mathrm {D}_n$ , that is, flag varieties $\operatorname {Fl}(1,n;n+1)$ and isotropic orthogonal Grassmannians $\operatorname {OG}(2,2n)$ ; in particular, we construct on each of those an exceptional collection invariant with respect to the entire automorphism group. For $\operatorname {OG}(2,2n)$ this is the first exceptional collection proved to be full.

AbstractWe investigate the topological nilpotence degree, in the sense of Henn–Lannes–Schwartz, of a connected Noetherian unstable algebra R. When R is the mod p cohomology ring of a compact Lie group, Kuhn showed how this invariant is controlled by centralizers of elementary abelian p-subgroups. By replacing centralizers of elementary abelian p-subgroups with components of Lannes’ T-functor, and utilizing the techniques of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra, we are able to generalize Kuhn’s result to a large class of connected Noetherian unstable algebras. We show how this generalizes Kuhn’s result to more general classes of groups, such as groups of finite virtual cohomological dimension, profinite groups, and Kac–Moody groups. In fact, our results apply much more generally, for example, we establish results for p-local compact groups in the sense of Broto–Levi–Oliver, for connected H-spaces with Noetherian mod p cohomology, and for the Borel equivariant cohomology of a compact Lie group acting on a manifold. Along the way we establish several results of independent interest. For example, we formulate and prove a version of Carlson’s depth conjecture in the case of a Noetherian unstable algebra of minimal depth.

We use some detailed knowledge of the cohomology ring of real Grassmann manifolds G k (ℝ n ) to compute zero-divisor cup-length and estimate topological complexity of motion planning for k-linear subspaces in ℝ n . In addition, we obtain results about monotonicity of Lusternik–Schnirelmann category and topological complexity of G k (ℝ n ) as a function of n.
