A Three months of age, 4.5 kg, female mixed (cross) breed presented to our clinic with complaint of the left hind leg lameness. In the clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic examination, ventral hip luxation was diagnosed. Based on the examination findings which indicated the case was chronic, surgical treatment was decided. Hip joint was exposed firstly by craniodorsal approach. Flattened and full acetabulum, fractured greater trochanter, ruptured gluteal muscle attachment and irreparably broken joint capsule were determined. Excision arthroplasty was performed by ventral approach. Greater Trochanter was attached to its position by an L shape Steinman pin using craniodorsal approach. Then, a drill hole was created on the greater trochanter, and a screw was inserted to dorsal acetabular rim. A synthetic suture passed through the hole was tied to the screw in a figure of eight mode. Postoperative antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs were used. Physiotherapy such as swimming and massage treatments was proposed following skin sutures removal. In the 4th week control postoperatively, the dog began to use the operated leg effectively despite the moderate quadriceps’ contracture. The contracture was mostly resolved 12th week by continuing physiotherapy.

ABSTRACT Twelve dogs with traumatic hip luxation were selected for surgical intervention with a modified iliofemoral suture technique using an anchor screw to substitute the passage of suture material through a perforated tunnel in the ilium. Six procedures were performed with non-absorbable suture and other six with absorbable suture materials. These cases were evaluated at 15, 30, 60, and 90 days after surgery by performing an ambulation analysis and palpation of the joint. In all cases, there was a return of partial and total limb support in an average of 3 and 19 postoperative, respectively. The fixation strategy of the suture material in the ilium using an anchor screw proved to be efficient with a smaller surgical approach and lesser surgical difficulty, maintaining joint congruence in acute as chronic luxation cases. The use of absorbable and non-absorbable sutures had excellent clinical results, but there was a subjective superiority of the first ones, once 4 dogs of the non-absorbable group presented some discomfort during the postoperative palpation of the joint, 90 days after surgery.

Hip instability and following hip luxation and subluxations remain common and serious problem among children with cerebral palsy (CP). The hip luxation and subluxations can be avoided using timely monitoring and early preventive treatment. However, standard scheme for patients’ management in children with CP is not adopted so far in Russian Federation. In 2014 on the territory of Tyumen region the Europe surveillance program for children with CP (CPUP) was introduced.Research purpose. To analyze the effectiveness of the early orthopedic complications prevention program in children with CP. Material and methods. The study included children with CP of the «Child psychoneurological medical-rehabilitation center «Nadezhda» register born in 2010 and earlier (n=176), undergoing surveillance under the European Program (main group); the comparison group consisted of children with CP which were treated before the adoption of the program (n=642). Group comparability was achieved by selecting children with one level of motor impairment according to the GMFCS classification. The presence of expressed orthopedic complications was exposed at the value of Reimers Index (RI) above 40%, and the effectiveness of the program was determined by a reduction in the frequency of such RI.Results. It was found that overall incidence of hip dislocation in control group decreased by 70%: in children with GMFCS II by 100%, GMFCS III – by 78%, GMFCS IV – by 62% and GMFCS V – by 74%.Conclusion. Due to the introduction of the Europe surveillance program on the territory of Tyumen region there is a significant decrease in orthopedic complications incidence in children with CP.

Objective This study is a case description of femoral neck lengthening and dorsal acetabular rim (DAR) arthroplasty to treat severe hip luxation in a 5-month-old male Cocker Spaniel (14.3 kg) and to compare the clinical outcome with that of contralateral femoral neck excision. Study design Case report. Results Femoral head coverage improved after surgery (preoperative lateralization of the centre of the femoral head with regard to the dorsolateral acetabular rim: 10 mm; postoperative lateralization of the centre of the femoral head: –1.3 mm). The postoperative Barden's test was negative. The dog was bearing weight 2 weeks postoperatively. Radiographic signs of bone healing were present at the 6-week follow-up examination. No complications were detected. Conclusions Femoral neck lengthening and DAR augmentation were performed in a growing dog affected by severe hip luxation and DAR insufficiency.

SummaryAn apparently otherwise healthy female reindeer was anaesthetised for open reduction and fixation of a hip luxation. The animal developed ruminal bloat which was treated with passage of an orogastric tube that was left indwelling during the procedure. A fluid inspiratory noise was audible two hours after decompression, and clear fluid was suctioned from the airway. It showed no other signs of regurgitation and aspiration of rumen contents intraoperatively, and did not develop obvious respiratory compromise while mechanically ventilated. In recovery, the deer became apnoeic and cyanotic and died suddenly within minutes of being positioned in the recovery box. Just before dying, it coughed a large blood clot out of the endotracheal tube (ETT) . Additional clots were found partially obstructing the ETT lumen once extubated postmortem. Evidence of aspiration was detected at postmortem examination, which also identified pulmonary haemorrhage.
