Abstract We construct an explicit family of modular iterated integrals which involves cusp forms. This leads to a new method of producing modular invariant functions based on iterated integrals of modular forms. The construction will be based on an extension of higher-order modular forms which, in contrast to the standard higher-order forms, applies to general Fuchsian groups of the first kind and, as such, is of independent interest.

In this monograph we consider the general setting of conformal graph directed Markov systems modeled by countable state symbolic subshifts of finite type. We deal with two classes of such systems: attracting and parabolic. The latter being treated by means of the former. We prove fairly complete asymptotic counting results for multipliers and diameters associated with preimages or periodic orbits ordered by a natural geometric weighting. We also prove the corresponding Central Limit Theorems describing the further features of the distribution of their weights. These results have direct applications to a wide variety of examples, including the case of Apollonian Circle Packings, Apollonian Triangle, expanding and parabolic rational functions, Farey maps, continued fractions, Mannenville-Pomeau maps, Schottky groups, Fuchsian groups, and many more. This gives a unified approach which both recovers known results and proves new results. Our new approach is founded on spectral properties of complexified Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius operators and Tauberian theorems as used in classical problems of prime number theory.

Abstract Given a closed, orientable, compact surface S of constant negative curvature and genus $g \geq 2$ , we study the measure-theoretic entropy of the Bowen–Series boundary map with respect to its smooth invariant measure. We obtain an explicit formula for the entropy that only depends on the perimeter of the $(8g-4)$ -sided fundamental polygon of the surface S and its genus. Using this, we analyze how the entropy changes in the Teichmüller space of S and prove the following flexibility result: the measure-theoretic entropy takes all values between 0 and a maximum that is achieved on the surface that admits a regular $(8g-4)$ -sided fundamental polygon. We also compare the measure-theoretic entropy to the topological entropy of these maps and show that the smooth invariant measure is not a measure of maximal entropy.

AbstractIn this paper we study the spaces of non-compact real algebraic curves, i.e. pairs (P, τ), where P is a compact Riemann surface with a finite number of holes and punctures and τ: P → P is an anti-holomorphic involution. We describe the uniformisation of non-compact real algebraic curves by Fuchsian groups. We construct the spaces of non-compact real algebraic curves and describe their connected components. We prove that any connected component is homeomorphic to a quotient of a finite-dimensional real vector space by a discrete group and determine the dimensions of these vector spaces.

Abstract In this paper we investigate the range of validity of Ruelle’s property. First, we show that every finitely generated Fuchsian group has Ruelle’s property. We also prove the existence of an infinitely generated Fuchsian group satisfying Ruelle’s property. Concerning the negative results, we first generalize Astala and Zinsmeister’s results [Mostow rigidity and Fuchsian groups. C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris311 (1990), 301–306; Teichmüller spaces and BMOA. Math. Ann.289 (1991), 613–625] by proving that all convergence-type Fuchsian groups of the first kind fail to have Ruelle’s property. Finally, we give some results about second-kind Fuchsian groups.

Abstract We say a group G satisfies properties (M) and (NM) if every nontrivial finite subgroup of G is contained in a unique maximal finite subgroup, and every nontrivial finite maximal subgroup is self-normalizing. We prove that the Bredon cohomological dimension and the virtual cohomological dimension coincide for groups that admit a cocompact model for EG and satisfy properties (M) and (NM). Among the examples of groups satisfying these hypothesis are cocompact and arithmetic Fuchsian groups, one-relator groups, the Hilbert modular group, and 3-manifold groups.
