The fact that every compact oriented 4-manifold admits spinc structures was proved long ago by Hirzebruch and Hopf. However, the usual proof is neither direct nor transparent. This article gives a new proof using twistor spaces that is simpler and more geometric. After using these ideas to clarify various aspects of four-dimensional geometry, we then explain how related ideas can be used to understand both spin and spinc structures in any dimension.

The paper studies explicitly the Hitchin system restricted to the Higgs fields on a fixed very stable rank 2 bundle in genus 2 and 3. The associated families of quadrics relate to both the geometry of Penrose's twistor spaces and several classical results.

AbstractA family of irreducible holomorphic symplectic (ihs) manifolds over the complex projective line has unobstructed deformations if its period map is an embedding. This applies in particular to twistor spaces of ihs manifolds. Moreover, a family of ihs manifolds over a subspace of the period domain extends to a universal family over an open neighborhood in the period domain.

The theory of twistors on foliated manifolds is developed. We construct the twistor space of the normal bundle of a foliation. It is demonstrated that the classical constructions of the twistor theory lead to foliated objects and permit to formulate and prove foliated versions of some well-known results on holomorphic mappings. Since any orbifold can be understood as the leaf space of a suitably defined Riemannian foliation we obtain orbifold versions of the classical results as a simple consequence of the results on foliated mappings.

Abstract Motivated by the recent interest in even-Clifford structures and in generalized complex and quaternionic geometries, we introduce the notion of generalized almost even-Clifford structure. We generalize the Arizmendi-Hadfield twistor space construction on even-Clifford manifolds to this setting and show that such a twistor space admits a generalized complex structure under certain conditions.
