Belyi pairs constitute an important element of the program developed by Alexander Grothendieck in 1972–1984. This program related seemingly distant domains of mathematics; in the case of Belyi pairs, such domains are two-dimensional combinatorial topology and one-dimensional arithmetic geometry. The paper contains an account of some computer-assisted calculations of Belyi pairs with fixed discrete invariants. We present three complete lists of polynomial-like Belyi pairs: (1) of genus 2 and (minimal possible) degree 5; (2) clean ones of genus 1 and degree 8; and (3) clean ones of genus 2 and degree 8. The explanation of some phenomena we encounter in these calculations will hopefully stimulate further development of the dessins d’enfants theory.

AbstractWe show that abelian surfaces (and consequently curves of genus 2) over totally real fields are potentially modular. As a consequence, we obtain the expected meromorphic continuation and functional equations of their Hasse–Weil zeta functions. We furthermore show the modularity of infinitely many abelian surfaces $A$ A over ${\mathbf {Q}}$ Q with $\operatorname{End}_{ {\mathbf {C}}}A={\mathbf {Z}}$ End C A = Z . We also deduce modularity and potential modularity results for genus one curves over (not necessarily CM) quadratic extensions of totally real fields.

Abstract Following Ryan and Tornaría, we prove that moduli of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues, between Saito–Kurokawa lifts and non-lifts (certain Siegel modular forms of genus 2), occur (squared) in denominators of central spinor L-values (divided by twists) for the non-lifts. This is conditional on Böcherer’s conjecture and its analogues and is viewed in the context of recent work of Furusawa, Morimoto and others. It requires a congruence of Fourier coefficients, which follows from a uniqueness assumption or can be proved in examples. We explain these factors in denominators via a close examination of the Bloch–Kato conjecture.

The paper studies explicitly the Hitchin system restricted to the Higgs fields on a fixed very stable rank 2 bundle in genus 2 and 3. The associated families of quadrics relate to both the geometry of Penrose's twistor spaces and several classical results.

Abstract Let C be a smooth projective curve of genus $2$ . Following a method by O’Grady, we construct a semismall desingularisation $\tilde {\mathcal {M}}_{Dol}^G$ of the moduli space $\mathcal {M}_{Dol}^G$ of semistable G-Higgs bundles of degree 0 for $G=\mathrm {GL}(2,\mathbb {C}), \mathrm {SL}(2,\mathbb {C})$ . By the decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne, one can write the cohomology of $\tilde {\mathcal {M}}_{Dol}^G$ as a direct sum of the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal {M}_{Dol}^G$ plus other summands supported on the singular locus. We use this splitting to compute the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal {M}_{Dol}^G$ and prove that the mixed Hodge structure on it is pure, in analogy with what happens to ordinary cohomology in the smooth case of coprime rank and degree.

Abstract. In this paper, we find all admissible topological conjugacy classes of periodic transformations of a two-dimensional surface of genus two. It is proved that there are exactly seventeen pairwise topologically non-conjugate orientation-preserving periodic pretzel transformations. The implementation of all classes by lifting the full characteristics of mappings from a modular surface to a surface of genus two is also presented. The classification results are based on Nielsen’s theory of periodic surface transformations, according to which the topological conjugacy class of any such homeomorphism is completely determined by its characteristic. The complete characteristic carries information about the genus of the modular surface, the ramified bearing surface, the periods of the ramification points and the turns around them. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the admissibility of the complete characteristic are described by Nielsen and for any surface they give a finite number of admissible collections. For surfaces of a small genus, one can compile a complete list of admissible characteristics, which was done by the authors of the work for a surface of genus 2.
