Abstract The Sb–S and In–S binary systems were assessed thermodynamically using the CALculation of PHase Diagrams (CAL-PHAD) approach based on the experiment data in the literature. Both phase diagrams revealed a congruent melting compound and liquid immiscibility. Therefore, associate species, Sb2S3 and In2S3, were introduced into the associate model to describe the liquid phase during optimization. The binary intermediate compounds, Sb2S3, InS(α, β), and In6S7, were treated as stoichiometric phases. Considering the wide composition range, In2S3(α, β, γ), were modeled using the sublattice model. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters representing most of the reliable thermodynamic properties and phase diagram information were derived.

Based on the thermodynamic calculation, the conditions of calcium treatment to sulfur gear steel are analyzed and the samples of rolled steel are studied. Results show that Calcium treatment to melting steel after RH refining can make the sulfide inclusions and calcium aluminates bind together and form the spindle shaped low melting compound inclusions. In the meanwhile, controlling of w (O) in steel below 0.0012% before calcium treatment is more beneficial to modify the Al2O3 and sulfide by the added calcium and to form the oxide-sulfide compound inclusions only if w (AlS) in steel is adjusted to 0.015%~0.025% before continuous casting. The Ca wire should also be fed at higher temperature.

Crystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is an important magneto-optical material. However, this crystal is an incongruent melting compound. As is well known, compared to the crystal growth of a congruent melting compound by using the Czochralski method, the crystal growth of an incongruent melting compound is more difficult. In this work, a system for growing Ga:YIG single crystals by the edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) method was designed and constructed, and the mechanism of crystal growth was also preliminarily studied. The Ga3+dopant concentration, the Curie temperature and the transmission spectra of as-grown crystals were investigated to evaluate their potential application in magneto-optical devices. The success of growing Ga:YIG crystals by the EFG method provides a new way to grow other incongruent melting compounds.
