In shipboard DC grids, tightly controlled load converters can impair the system stability, thus provoking the ship blackout. Conversely, load converters regulated by low control bandwidths are capable of inducing a stabilizing action. This compensation is verifiable if the loads are few. On the contrary, the balancing of control dynamics is hardly evaluated if the bus feeds multiple (i.e., hundreds or more) DC controlled loads. In this paper, the weighted bandwidth method (WBM) is presented to assess the small-signal stability of a complex shipboard power system by aggregating the multiple converters into two sets of controlled loads. Once the validity of the aggregation is proven, a stability study is performed on the two-loads system. As the last system is more inclined to instability than the initial multiple-loads system, the verification of the two-loads stability criterion guarantees that the shipboard DC grid also remains stable. Finally, emulations on HIL verify the proposed stability assessment thus providing the first unique verification of WBM.

With the strengthening of international environmental regulations, many studies on the integrated electric propulsion systems applicable to eco-friendly ship are being conducted. However, few studies have been performed to establish a guide line for the overall pure electric propulsion ship design. Therefore, this paper introduces the comprehensive design of DC shipboard power system for pure electric propulsion ship based on battery energy storage system (BESS). To design and configure the pure electric propulsion ship, 2 MW propulsion car ferry was assumed and adopted to be the target vessel in this paper. In order to design the overall system, a series of design processes, such as the decision of the ship operation profile, BESS capacity selection, configuration of the power conversion systems for propulsion, battery charging/discharging procedures, classification of system operation modes, and analysis of the efficiency, were considered. The proposed efficient design and analysis of the pure electric propulsion ship was qualitatively and quantitatively validated by MATLAB Simulink tool. The methodology presented in this paper can help design real ships before the system commissioning.

This paper presents a volumetric comparison among three possible optimized three phase EMI filter structures, a three phase PFC converter used in cutting edge applications, such as avionics, space or shipboard power systems. The size minimization of each of the filter structures, described in the paper, was performed utilizing the volumetric optimization methodology proposed in the paper. This paper theoretically demonstrates the design steps for choosing the appropriate filter component values and number of filter stages to achieve the smallest volume of the DM filter stage for any given EMI filter structure. While the validation of the proposed design methodology was done through a MATLAB simulation, an experimental verification was also performed by designing and comparing the optimized EMI filter structures for a 2.3 kW proof-of-concept of a three-phase boost PFC converter for more electric aircraft (MEA) applications to comply with the stringent EMI requirements of the DO-160F standard.
