The objective of this paper is to optimize the selection of seismic ground motion intensity indexes in the seismic fortification of urban shallow-buried rectangular tunnels. This paper takes a shallow-buried rectangular tunnel in a city as the research object, uses ABAQUS to establish a finite-infinite element coupling model, and selects 70 typical seismic ground motions for dynamic calculation. Using dynamic time history analysis method to study the seismic response of tunnel lining structure in terms of internal force, minimum safety factor and strain energy, and analyze their correlation with 15 seismic ground motion parameters. Selecting the seismic ground motion parameters with strong correlation, good effectiveness, and high credibility for safety evaluation. The research results show that: Peak acceleration (PGA) has a weak correlation with the seismic response of tunnel lining structures, and PGA as an independent seismic ground motion intensity index has greater uncertainty in the seismic fortification of tunnels; Peak displacement (PGD), Root-mean-square velocity (RMSV), Root-mean-square displacement (RMSD), and Specific energy density (SED) can be used as independent seismic ground motion intensity index, The linear regression model is used to evaluate the safety of the lining structure, and finally the evaluation result is verified by the incremental dynamic analysis method (IDA), which shows that the evaluation result is accurate. The research results can provide reference for the preliminary design of seismic fortification of rectangular shallow tunnels.

The goal of this paper is to develop a new empirical relationship between observed macroseismic intensity and strong ground motion parameters such as peak ground acceleration (PGA) and velocity (PGV) for the Vrancea subcrustal earthquakes. The recent subcrustal earthquakes provide valuable data to examine these relationships for Vrancea seismogenic region. This region is one of the most active seismic zones in Europe and it is well-known for the strong subcrustal earthquakes. We examine the correlation between the strong ground-motion records and the observed intensities for major and moderate earthquakes with Mw ≥ 5.4 and epicentral intensity in the range VI to IX MSK degrees that occurred in Vrancea zone in the period 1977-2009. The empirical relationships between maximum intensity and ground parameters obtained and published by various authors have shown that these parameters do not always show a one-to-one correspondence, and the errors associated with the intensity estimation from PGA/PGV are sometimes +/-2 MSK degree. In the present study, the relation between macroseismic intensity and PGA/PGV will be given both as a mathematical equation, but also as corresponding ground motion intervals. Because of the intensity data spreading and errors related to mathematical approximations, it is necessary to systematically monitor not only the acceleration and velocity but also all the other ground motion parameters. The mathematical relation between these parameters might be used for the rapid assessment of ground shaking severity and potential damages in the areas affected by the Vrancea earthquakes.

This paper investigates the correlation between ground motion parameters and displacement demands of mid-rise RC frame buildings on soft soils considering the soil-structure interaction. The mid-rise RC buildings are represented by using 5, 8, 10, 13, and 15-storey frame building models with no structural irregularity. A total of 105 3D nonlinear time history analyses were carried out for 21 acceleration records and 5 different building models. The roof drift ratio (RDR) obtained as inelastic displacement demands at roof level normalized by the building height is used for demand measure, while 20 ground motion parameters were used as intensity measure. The outcomes show velocity related parameters such as Housner Intensity (HI), Root Mean Square of Velocity (Vrms), Velocity Spectrum Intensity (VSI) and Peak Ground Velocity (PGV), which reflect inelastic displacement demands of mid-rise buildings as a damage indicator on soft soil deposit reasonably well. HI is the leading parameter with the strongest correlation. However, acceleration and displacement related parameters exhibit poor correlation. This study proposed new combined multiple ground motion parameter equations to reflect the damage potential better than a single ground motion parameter. The use of combined multiple parameters can be effective in determining seismic damages by improving the scatter by at least 24% compared to the use of a single parameter.
