A Conversation with Jacob Nachmias

We are sad to report that Professor Jacob (Jack) Nachmias passed away on March 2, 2019. Nachmias was born in Athens, Greece, on June 9, 1928. To escape the Nazis, he and his family came to the United States in 1939. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and then an MA from Swarthmore College, where he worked with Hans Wallach and Wolfgang Kohler; his PhD in Psychology was from Harvard University. Nachmias spent the majority of his career as a Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He made fundamental contributions to our understanding of vision, most notably through the study of eye movements, the development of signal detection theory and forced-choice psychophysical methods, and the psychophysical characterization of spatial-frequency-selective visual channels. Nachmias' work was recognized by his election to the National Academy of Sciences and receipt of the Optical Society's Tillyer Award.

Situating Sustainability against Displacement

Based on an account of an ongoing campus-community collaboration between students and faculty at Swarthmore College and community leaders in North Philadelphia, this chapter discusses a critical approach to community “sustainability” in an historically African American, urban context. Narrating the development of the “Sustainable Serenity Collaborative,” the chapter examines the Collaborative’s values, best practices, and accomplishments, challenging conventional notions of both sustainability and community-based academic engagement. It highlights the generative possibilities and tensions associated with building genuine and reciprocal alliances to advance environmental justice and sustainable community development across differences marked by race, gender, class, geography, and expertise. Resisting “green gentrification,” the Collaborative embraces a vision of just sustainability without displacement driven by the needs and dreams of the predominantly Black, low-income residents of North Philadelphia. The chapter focuses in detail on one of the Collaborative’s projects – Serenity Soular – a community sustainable development initiative that aims to establish worker-owned solar enterprises to solarize and preserve the neighborhoods in North Philadelphia at risk of displacement.

What’s in a name: sociale constructie doorgelicht

In het werk An Invitation to Social Construction staat het zeer relevante vraagstuk rond sociale constructie centraal. De auteur, Kenneth J. Gergen, is een Amerikaans psycholoog die werkzaam is als professor aan het Swarthmore College. Het gaat om de derde editie, waarvan de eerste dateert van 1999 en de tweede van 2009. De vele veranderingen binnen dit domein noodzaakten een herziening, die in 2015 werd gepubliceerd. Met het werk beoogt de auteur de lezer te introduceren in het thema van sociale constructie en de debatten die hieromtrent bestaan. Belangrijk is dat hij opmerkt dat het werk niet fungeert als ‘the last word, but as a beginning’ (2015, p. xi). Na een volledige lezing van het boek zou iedereen over een afdoende basis moeten beschikken om de discussie hierover aan te gaan. In het voorwoord erkent de auteur ook de impact van zijn eigen persoon en ervaringen op de wijze waarop het boek vorm kreeg en werd geschreven. Vanuit een sociaal constructivistisch perspectief is een dergelijke bedenking uitermate relevant omdat zij aanzet tot reflectie over (de impact van) de eigen persoon in het onderzoek, iets wat vaak onderbelicht blijft in velerlei methodologische handboeken. Aldus gaat het om een kruispuntdenken dat inhoudt dat een individu wordt gevormd door een interactie tussen verschillende elementen die de sociale positie in de samenleving bepalen (Hankivsky, 2014). Individuen geven op die manier niet alleen zichzelf vorm als persoon, maar ook anderen; zo construeren zij de sociale wereld (Ken, 2007). Dit maakt dat de professionele en persoonlijke achtergrond, ervaringen en overtuigingen al dan niet bewust interfereren in de wijze waarop iemand onderzoek verricht, artikelen en monografieën schrijft. Daarom speelt ‘het mens- en maatschappijbeeld en de ideologie’ van de individuele wetenschapper een niet te miskennen rol en kan dit het verrichte onderzoek of de uitgewerkte argumentatie eveneens ‘sociaal construeren’ (Verrycken, 2009, p. 137-138).

The Wister Education Center and Greenhouse: Uniting Program and Process, History and Mission, Architecture, and Sustainability on the Swarthmore College Campus

The new 5,200 square foot Wister Education Center and Greenhouse for The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College is the most recent and far-reaching green building on campus and serves as a model for integrating sustainable design with the function, mission, and architecture of the institution.
