Social movement activism presumes strategic communication processes by which groups achieve extra-governmental changes to public and private policy through public pressure. Such pressure presumes conditions of five kinds: strain, mobilization, confrontation, negotiation, and resolution. To explain this process, several cases will be offered but especially the U.S. civil rights movement and the activist career of John Lewis. Social movement activism is a test of wills, a test of character, strength, fact, value, identity, identification, and place

Using interviews with Republic of New Afrika citizens and participant observation, this chapter seeks to understand New Afrikan lifestyle politics more deeply. Personal stories about the real and imagined RNA family, educational choices, and career paths as paper-citizens in an oppressive nation add more depth to the historical and sociological discussions about social movement activism. Because New Afrikans were members of organizations such as the Black Panther Party, because they experienced incarceration, and because they participated in all manners of activism, sometimes from their youth into adulthood, the people who have carried the NAIM into the twenty-first century provide unique opportunities to question and review the life course consequences of social movement activism.

The chapter begins by providing an overview of the aftermath of the financial crisis and introducing austerity. It then identifies the key strands of the book; the affective dimension of political engagement; social movements and emotions; gender and social movement activism. A brief overview of the research project is provided, focusing on the feminist approach to research. This chapter concludes with a chapter outline for the book.
