AbstractIn this paper we study non-negatively curved and rationally elliptic GKM$$_4$$ 4 manifolds and orbifolds. We show that their rational cohomology rings are isomorphic to the rational cohomology of certain model orbifolds. These models are quotients of isometric actions of finite groups on non-negatively curved torus orbifolds. Moreover, we give a simplified proof of a characterisation of products of simplices among orbit spaces of locally standard torus manifolds. This characterisation was originally proved in Wiemeler (J Lond Math Soc 91(3): 667–692, 2015) and was used there to obtain a classification of non-negatively curved torus manifolds.

Abstract We show that compact Kähler manifolds have the rational cohomology ring of complex projective space provided a weighted sum of the lowest three eigenvalues of the Kähler curvature operator is positive. This follows from a more general vanishing and estimation theorem for the individual Hodge numbers. We also prove an analogue of Tachibana’s theorem for Kähler manifolds.

Abstract We compute the rational cohomology of the universal family of smooth cubic surfaces using Vassiliev’s method of simplicial resolution. Modulo embedding, the universal family has cohomology isomorphic to that of $\mathbb{P}^2$. A consequence of our theorem is that over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, away from finitely many characteristics, the average number of points on a smooth cubic surface is q2+q + 1.

AbstractWe prove that the topological complexity of a quaternionic flag manifold is half of its real dimension. For the real oriented Grassmann manifolds G͠n,k, 3 ≤ k ≤ [n/2], the zero-divisor cup-length of the rational cohomology of G͠n,k is computed in terms of n and k which gives a lower bound for the topological complexity of G͠n,k, TC(G͠n,k). When k = 3, it is observed in certain cases that better lower bounds for TC(G͠n,3) are obtained using ℤ2-cohomology.

We consider the complex Grassmannian Grk,n of k-dimensional subspaces of ℂn. There is a natural inclusion in,r:Grk,n↪Grk,n+r. Here, we use Sullivan models to compute the rational cohomology algebra of the component of the inclusion in,r in the space of mappings from Grk,n to Grk,n+r for r≥1 and in particular to show that the cohomology of mapGrn,k,Grn,k+r;in,r contains a truncated algebra ℚx/xr+n+k2−nk, where x=2, for k≥2 and n≥4.

We completely describe the algebraic part of the rational cohomology of the Torelli groups of the manifolds $\#^{g}S^{n}\times S^{n}$ relative to a disc in a stable range, for $2n\geqslant 6$ . Our calculation is also valid for $2n=2$ assuming that the rational cohomology groups of these Torelli groups are finite-dimensional in a stable range.

Abstract The Torelli group of $W_g = \#^g S^n \times S^n$ is the group of diffeomorphisms of $W_g$ fixing a disc that act trivially on $H_n(W_g;\mathbb{Z} )$ . The rational cohomology groups of the Torelli group are representations of an arithmetic subgroup of $\text{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z} )$ or $\text{O}_{g,g}(\mathbb{Z} )$ . In this article we prove that for $2n \geq 6$ and $g \geq 2$ , they are in fact algebraic representations. Combined with previous work, this determines the rational cohomology of the Torelli group in a stable range. We further prove that the classifying space of the Torelli group is nilpotent.
