The aim of this chapter is to provide teachers with an understanding of who emergent bilingual students are and how they can adapt their practices in order to use students' home language as a resource rather than as a deficit. The chapter will share findings from a study conducted with emergent bilingual students in a kindergarten writing workshop. It will also focus on how teachers can adopt an additive approach to language that expands children's linguistic, social, and cultural resources while supporting learning a new language as well and literacy development.

The online writing workshop, led by Amélie Charcosset, was conducted as part of our seminar-course entitled "Giving body to one's speeches. Writing and eloquence workshop", at the EFLE of the University of Lausanne. The double specificity of this session was to be carried out online, via the video meeting software Zoom, and to close a particular semester, because of the confinement and the distance learning. In this context, I proposed synchronous classes on Zoom, with the double objective of giving body to writing and making body through writing and saying. Writing then appears as an open space, a convivial place to stay connected, with the word as landscape and sharing (saying) as horizon.

Constructing longitudinal research has, for all the authors, entailed long, and sometimes difficult, sometimes funny, always moving, personal stories. This chapter explains how the studies were conducted, both the original research and the subsequent revisits, and how the researchers coped with having to conduct them. The authors of this Epilogue compiled this material by recording conversations with each other about how they did this research during the evenings of their final writing workshop. The transcripts of these conversations were then written up, and the edited the transcript. The result is a rather honest account of how research like this is conducted, of the pitfalls and difficulties of such work, and of its joys.
